Hi all,

We are having a real problem getting genuine non spam email out to our
members.

They register, we send out a registration email, it gets dumped into some
AOL/Yahoo/whatever trash/spam folder. Consequently they can't even login as
the email contain their password!

Is there anything we can do to stop this happening, please?

Jenny

Would need to know *why* its being dumped. Is your host on a blacklist? Is
your domain?

It could be even simpler than that! It might be that the subject
contains words or numbers that make a filter *think* it is spam. I know
that a lot of filters will class emails as spam if they contain a string
of numbers like an order number or such -- this can be very annoying Smile

If your list is sending an email where the TO field is not specifically the
email address of the recepient, mail servers like Yahoo and Hotmail will
automatically consider it as spam. Your recepient will need to flag this as
'not junk' but of course if they never check their junk mail folder, that
won't help.

Your other choice is to switch to a more decent mailing list
software/server where it sends each recepient using their email address and
if this is not a read-only list, use the list's address as the reply-to
address.

Can you post a full copy of the email you send here? The assembled panel
might be able to give you tips on how to make it less "spammy"<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

AOL is really, really good about helping legitimate e-mail senders who want to
send stuff to their members. Visit <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://postmaster.info.aol.com" target="_blank">http://postmaster.info.aol.com</a> for
(hopefully helpful) info.

Unfortunately this doesn't help too much. AOL says, have your member check
their spam folder and add our email address to their list. Trouble is they
never get an email from us so how do we tell them this?

Good point.

Can you send me a copy of one of the emails you send out, with full headers?

I'll see if I can analyze it and figure out why it might be getting dumped.

The email address I use to post is valid.

Send me a separate email after you've sent the message itself, just in case my
filters tag the first one as spam and dump it.

On your registration pages you'll need to put the email address you will use
for sending the email and ask peopl. to ensure it's on their whitelist
before registering. You'll probably want that notice plastered in a lot of
places.
Also provide a means for them to have the activation email resent.
AOL has some magic button on their email client to "Report this as spam".
Only takes a few to nail you.

I meant the FULL email, in it's entirity. There may be a character string in
there that looks innocent to you, but sets off big red flashing lights in
the spam detectors.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Yep, yet more hassle for innocent people. We now need to plaster all over
the site "please whitelist my email!!!!"

Probably better would be "please don't be a wanker by using a futile
blacklist!!!"

Open an AOL account and send yourself through the list a test message and
take it from there. Nothing beats troubleshooting this isseu yourself. Once
you find out, cancel the membershiop and you owe nothing.

Like I posted earlier, your list is probably not sending to each member
specifically.
