Post subject: A few domain-related questions
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

My customer has a UK domain name domainname.co.uk registered under Nominet
through ABCnet.com. The Pri and Sec nameservers settings for the domain are
currently:

dns0.abc.net.uk
dns1.abc.net.uk

The POP3 and SMTP configuration in the customer's Outlook Express is:
zeus.abc.net.uk (both POP3 and SMPT)

We now need to change the Pri and Sec nameservers to point the domain name
to a new server outside UK. My questions:

1) Will the customer be able to retrieve their last few emails from
dns0/dns2.abc.net.uk once we have changed to the new nameservers?

2) My customer is using the ADSL service of ABCnet.com. Would the change of
the nameservers affect the ADSL connection? My guess is that a static IP
address from ABCnet.com is needed instead of a domain name. Afterall a
domain name is still pointing to an IP address.

3) The domain name is registered with Nominet nic.co.uk through ABCnet.com.
Is there a domain manager that comes with the domain name? If there is, is
it at Nominet or ABCnet.com?

Thanks.

Quick answer to number 3.

You cannot do this through Nominet, it must be through the registrar, which
in your case appears to be ABCnet.com

Nominet would be his registrar in this case ABC just registered it on his
behalf. Here is a link to Nominet's FAQ for changing Hosts(or registration
agent as they call it)

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.nominet.org.uk/MakingChangesToYourDomainName/ChangingYourRegistrationAgentisp/ChangingRegistrationAgentFaq/" target="_blank">http://www.nominet.org.uk/MakingChangesToYourDomainName/ChangingYourRe...tration</a>

DNS just tells requests made on the Domain where to go (i.e Mail traffic
gets sent to mail.mydomain.co.uk and web traffic gets directed to the IP of
the webserver)
The mailservers you listed belong to ABC so I dont see why he wouldn't just
dont cancel
service with ABC before Nameservers update.

Im a little lost on this one? Is he hosting the site on his own server over
DSL or is it hosted
on one of ABC's webservers? I believe it is the latter and if so there
should be no effect. When you point the domain at the new server they(New
Hosting Company) will give you the correct NameServer IP's and his IP if
they are providing IP based hosting.

I have looked over Nominet and I do not think they offer a Domain Manager
like NetSol or Gandi

I hope this helps feel free to email or post to the group with any more
questions

Nominet are not a registrar.

ABCnet.co.uk are a valid registrar for .co.uk names. ABCnet.com are not.

Usual confusion when OP doesn't give the name.
