I just went to dictionary.com and it worked just fine. Google may
have changed who they are using, but dictionary.com is still there.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

While those of us who write in British English use the OED (the *only*
reliable dictionary of British English).

But it's not available online, for those couch potatoes who don't want
to stand up and walk to the bookshel to find a definition Wink

BTW, my 13 y.o. son's Chanukah present (at his request) was the
compact OED. Needs a powerful magnifying glass, but he's gotten hours
of fun out of it!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It is, but you have to pay (quite rightly).

It is also published as an ebook.

Have you ever tried this define:your-word - quite handy at times.

I don't use anyone online dictionaries. Every single one I have come across are
crap,
not at all concise, lacking many words and alternative spellings. Most of them
are geared towards the bastardisation of the English language by American
spelling, and have the wrong pronouciation.

It was only about three of four years ago I used dictionary.com to lookup the
spelling of 'palimpsest', just to find it was not listed!! Quite ironic in
someways, giving its meaning.

I'll stick with my 10" thick OED (offline), until I feel the need to go high tech.

Must admit I was quite gutted when Encyclopedia Britannica stopped going out of
print Sad Although I do have Encyclopedia Britannica from 1919 and 1964 Smile

They are also online, but quite rightly charge. But like you, I use
them offline (have the shorter edition on CD)

They have republished in repro format the original edition from 1768
to 1771 (it was published in installments that week by week built into
a .... see, nothing's new <g>)

Anyway, it's great for contemporary data.
