Anyone knows what is the average downtime (or an acceptable range) for a
hosting service?

Thanks,

FC

No idea what the "average" is. My hosting (for my main site) has been
unavailable twice for relatively brief periods since I took it out years and
years ago. I'm sure there must have been reboots that I wasn't aware of, so
the true figure must be higher, but the http checking service I subscribe to
has only ever reported two outages and it reports 100% uptime so far this
year.

Figures of 99% uptime can be misleading, because its actually very easy to
achieve. Do the math, 99% uptime over a month allows your host to be
unavailable for quarter of a day. I host a test site on a pc at home, and
even with the various reboots and other things I do with it I still
regularly achieve 99.x% uptime.

If you are hosting a commercial site then I would pay more attention to what
compensation they will pay you if the site goes down and where the burden of
proof lies. I think you'll find that difficult to pin down, and even more
difficult to get any compensation.
