Post subject: Okay, please tell me I'm not the only one
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I've just had an interview for a relatively highly paid job as a web
developer (part of a 15 strong team) for a very high traffic finance
site...Doing more backend stuff with ASP rather than front end designing....

I've had a call today asking me to go back for a second interview, to
meet the rest of the web-team to assess how well I get along with them....
From what I've heard, it sounds more like a formality than an
interview....A "meet your workmates" session....

However, I'm now starting to question my ability to do the job in
question....
I'm starting to think that I'll be asked to start work, and on my first
morning, I'll be exposed as a great big fraud who managed to talk a good
interview, but who's really in completely out of his depth....

I know this isn't true, but I still can't help panicking about it....And
I've never really felt this way before starting a new job in the past....

Does anybody else get this feeling of paranoia before starting a new
job?....

Yes, it's perfectly normal! I always start thinking things like that
when we take on a contract that requires I learn a new skill too.

I thought it was probably just perfectly normal paranoia, LOL....Still
doesn't stop it eating away at my gut though....
Having said that, and given the gargantuan size of my gut, it could
probably do with having something eat away at it, LOL...

Yes. Too often, when I hear a project description the first time I have the
feeling that I have no clue what the other is talking about. I learned to
just go with the flow, in the end all will be clear. Yet, I often still
have that weird sensation in the beginning.

I think your feelings are perfectly normal (or if they aren't "normal" at
least we both share the same feelings about starting a new job so you are
not alone).

Second interviews are often a formality, but not always. I've worked places
where the MD liked to see all candidates before hiring - never knew him to
reject anyone but he always had the privilege to do so. Its always possible
that they may have drawn up a shortlist so you might be up against someone
else or they might have a few (minor) things that they want to resolve
before hiring you.

Hope it goes well for you.

regards,

Brian.

Yes. I think it's natural. Unless you lied to them (knowing you, I know
this is not the case) then they have recruited you based on what you have
told them. If they were not happy with it, they would not recruit you.

You only have a problem if you really are a big fraud! Smile

I've seen your websites. While I (obviously) can't look at the code,
I've see what you do with it. You're good, no doubt about it. And you
have no need to worry.

Your jitters are perfectly normal. It's a big step, and you're afraid
you'll fail. Didn't you feel the same way when you designed your first
site for a real customer? And if I were in your shoes, I'd be more
worried if I wasn't scared.

If it's a good company, they'll start you off slowly, getting a feel for
you and your work while you're getting comfortable with them.

Also, look at the down side. If it doesn't work out, you'll be right
back where you are right now. You won't be homeless, you won't be dead,
and your camel won't bite you. The job is great - but is where you are
now all that bad?

Go for it! Make your jitters work for you - they help keep you alert!

I've done what I do for 28 years, and I still get butterflies before
some new gigs.

You'll do fine. Just get the job. Smile

Precisely. Your job is to describe yourself well at the interview. It's up
to them to decide you can do the job. Once they've done so you have to
assume that unless you told some blatant porkies (which they'd probably
have spotted) you are the best they could get.
