I'm currently an Internet Technology student at a small community
college. I'm really interested in becoming a webmaster even though I
have no clue as to what the job description is. All I know is that a
webmaster designs web sites and maintains it. But there has to more
to that, right? Is there any current webmasters who love their career
and can give me more info on:
What a webmaster does?
Who does a webmaster work for?
Can a webmaster work from home?
How does a webmaster find work?
How much training and education is needed?
Any information, hints, or suggestions will be helpful. >> Stay informed about: What is a webmaster? |

One day we will all wake up and got to the shower, suddenly realising this
has all been a terrible dream. My point; many different people will give
you a different definition of what it means to be a webmaster, but the
truth is that we can't agree upon it )

Check out the many, many previous threads on the definition of
"webmaster". Or stay tuned for another lively debate .

Well, yes, Dylan is right in that all of the rest of this riff-raff won't
agree on the term. The real skinny is that I'm the only real webmaster here
- all the rest of them are shameless imposters and ne'erdowells.
So there you go, there's the definition of a web master: Marc Bissonnette.
You can either quit your courses right now and save yourself a ton of
money, or you can complete the program and, with a colossal amount of luck,
become my lackey in life. I might throw you a few pennies an hour for your
troubles (Canadian pennies, at that!), but you should really just consider
the fact that I allow you to speak my name as payment enough.
Sound fair ?

Yes or no. Depends on the employer. I work for myself and administer
my own web site, and only my own web site. I don't call myself a web
master, but I clearly am the master of my site.

Advertises, allegedly.

Very little conventional, but lots of self.
For commercial work you'll need to be au fait with marketing (the
primary purpose of most web sites), and in no particular order of
importance networking basics (tcp/ip), Unix, Windows, HTML,
Javascript, accessibility issues, cross-platform development concepts,
Perl, PHP, data management, graphics, hacking, criminology, design,
communication.
I've probably missed some out, but the debate will rage for a few days
yet.....

"All I know is that a webmaster designs web sites and maintains it."
That is not nessarily right. That's more of a webdesigner role, but a
webmaster sometimes, but not always has something to do with designing a
site. Or at least know how to make a website A webmaster might just take
care of the servers, or might take care of the servers, programming and
design. If you talk to 100 people on the definition of a webmaster, you'll
get 100 different answers.
My definition would be a webmaster is somebody that knows at least the
basics of everything there is needed to run a website, from the servers,
routers to designing of the site and maybe some programming thrown in for
good luck.
What you might want to do is think of what you want to specialize in. Like
if you want to become a webdesigner, then learn about that. If you want to
become a server admin, then look into that. The same with programming or
what ever else. Asking questions about a "webmaster" is too general. What is
it specifically that you want to do (programming, server admin, maybe just
the mail server admin part or ftp server admin part).

I'm sorry, but newsgroups are new to me. I'm in here because this is
a class assignment. I'm supposed to get information on webmasters but
it's hard to follow up on the topic. I've found some information.
However, some of the threads doesn't even have anything to do with
webmaster. Maybe it takes time to get use to this forum??? I'm
confused.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: What is a webmaster? |

Yes, it takes time to get used to this forum. You'll find many long-time,
oldtimers in this newsgroup who are willing to share their expertise and
experiences when the question is asked nicely.
Often times, a complete newb will come in and ask the same darned
question that 9,000 other people have asked in the past month without
first checking google (http://groups.google.com) for an answer, first.
Since most of us are involved in the web industry in a full-time basis,
this group tends to be used, in addition to professional support, as a
steam-valve, comic relief and occasional battleground
You'll find many people from many aspects of the field of "webmaster" in
this newsgroup. Myself, for example, I have the artistic talent of
powdered toast (i.e. none) - I am a perl CGI programmer and MySQL
database guy - basically, I do back-end stuff, content automation and
server administration. Could I be called a webmaster? I suppose, if you
consider "master of the server on which the website resides" - then
again, you might only consider a webmaster as the one directly
responsible for it's look, or it's content, or it's overall planning, or,
or, or (ad infinitum)
A really rocking website is usually the result of more than any single
person's work. The term 'webmaster' is far too loosely used and often
mistakenly so by any slob who's downloaded a copy of FrontPage and thinks
that they can make their own cnn.com on a Monday evening.
A real webmaster, IMO, will do the things that (s)he does best and have
the professional wisdom to call in other specialists for tasks or
elements in which (s)he isn't so strong in.
Hope this is of some help.

Typical of modern-day education. If the answer isn't served on a plate the
poor kids don't have the first idea how to figure it out! Study, read,
research!

ROTFL!
Sorry, I don't mean to be rude. But *you're* confused? Welcome to AWW,
also known as 'nutter's lair' where you'll find some of the weirdest
eccentrics on Usenet.
I thought I'd told you what a web master is? It's someone who
administers a web site (or sites).
Is that succinct enough? If you want to interview me, track me down
