I am interested in becoming a webmaster as a new career. I am
currently a software application developer. Any old app developers out
there that have made the leap to webmaster that can give some advise
that might be helpful. Thanks...

Think carefully if that's really what you want.

It's not so much a leap as a stumble.

To begin with your biggest strength will be server side - I'm guessing you
have mastered a few languages and can manage a RDBMS based app. Hopefully
one of your existing skill sets will transfer easily to a commonly available
web server environment, but remember: web apps are stateless - which is
(probably) unlike anything you have come across before.

Keep the HTML simple until you have mastered it. No, keep the HTML simple
at all times. Do not be tempted (by the dark side) to add presenational
markup.

Add in a little css to give some pazazz, but keep it simple. Don't do stuff
that you don't understand until you know what it is that you don't
understand.

beg, steal or borrow resources to do graphic things - find yourself a
partner who will knock up the odd graphic in exchange for beer, pizza or
sexual favours perhaps.

ignore 99% of all 'html tutorial' web sites

jobbing plumbers earn more than the average webmaster.

do you have a project or commision you need to get going? how far have you
got? do you have a URL?

In any event, good luck and have fun - it is supposed to be fun.

I've written dozens of invoice forms, seen hundreds of invoice forms, now on
the internet there's 1000s and I'm still writing more. The moral of this short
story is to use templates, don't revinvent the wheel. What works now is the
product of many refinements over a lot of programmers, do things from scratch
and you'll take off very slowly.
