Post subject: default IIS / FTP permissions
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Recently one of my website clients called saying he was
unable to put a file with ftp, 550 access denied.
I logged in and my admin account was also unable to put a
file. I checked the permissions and ALL of my website
directory permissions had changed.
They are set to -xr --r --r "administrator" "none"

I am unable to change any of the permissions. Even if I
log in at the console as admin and change the individual
permissions on the file, I get no response. I can
add/remove users, groups or mod permission via
the "users". Add or remove users from the web directories
but the actual permissions never change.
I am not using virtual ftp - I actual create a user and
then drop that user into a ftpaccess group.

was I hacked? is there some overriding security that is
not allowing me to make changes?

any suggestions appreciated

It does sound like the machine has been compromised, if this is the case
then you should rebuild the machine in order to be 100% sure you machine is
safe.

Is the FTP related directories the only ones giving you the problem?
Have you tried to take ownership of the directories while logged in as the
local administrator and then change the permissions?
