A decade of good website design? I must have fallen asleep!
Interestingly enough, Nielsen doesn't actually say that at all, but he
does say that 80% of the problems of 10 years ago are still an issue now
and that we still have a long way to go.
What do I find amazing is his /prediction/ that search engines will be
important in the future (shock!) :\

I thought it was interesting that he cited the success of ebay, google,
amazon and yahoo despite none of them being "fancy" or "glamorous".

Indeed! On the flip side, I personally find ebay and yahoo to be
over-cluttered in their design and a bit of a bugger to use. Google I
like *because* of its being plain, and Amazon is nice even though it's a
bit cluttered because it's easy to use IMHO.

Yes, I agree that ebay, amazon and yahoo are a bit cluttered. Just shows
you it doesn't have to be perfect to succeed!

Heh, you just have to have a "Patent Pending" on just about everything

If you offer such in-demand content as those sites, agreed, imperfection
can be overcome.
If you're more like the rest of us, you really can't afford to make the
mistakes those sites make.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: A decade of good website design |

So, you're saying people didn't want to buy books online till Amazon came
along?
With Ebay, ok. But still, whether it's a need you're filling or a need
you're creating, it all starts with content people will want to use.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: A decade of good website design |

Important? As in I can not obtain bread, milk, cheese, beer,
cigarettes or a school place for my daughter without them?
Technology has an odd way of inventing the need then inventing the
solution in a never ending circle of chasing one's own tail. Hello,
I'm back in luddite mode! <g>

The article is by and large one man's impression...I would disagree with a
number of the observations.
However, what I found most interesting and most objectionable is the
assumption, based on the doubling of the number of words in a user search
request, that users are becoming more sophisticated. That's utter nonsense.
The numbers of terms has increased simply because the amount of contention
has increased to unimaginable level between '94 and '04....not because the
users are becoming more sophisticated.

Don't confuse "important" with "necessary". There's a degree of difference
there.
I read that as the search engines will more and more become the first
thing an internet user will turn to for finding anything. I think it's
mostly that way already, though. It'll be interesting to see what happens
in the future. Imagine one site to go to where every web site you could
possibly get to (with the obvious limits like "just went up today" or
"dynamically generated") is categorized for your searching convenience...<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: A decade of good website design |

Not that they didn't want to, but they didn't realize they could.
I remember Amazon as a single page list of titles links to buy.
Radical stuff at the time.

Nielsen... he's a guy that once had interesting ideas and quite some
influence, but has not contributed anything worthy in many many years.
I mean, a usability expert that has THIS website:
