"graba" asked:
: ..hi...can anybody suggest the best way (minimal site and mail downtime)
: when moving to new host...thanx...
The article at http://www.smoothwebmove.com/movingprocess.html has lots of
info on this.
2 more suggestions:
- Direct all site email to non-site addresses until the transfer is
complete.
- Make a minor change on the home page on the new server so that you can
easily see which server you're viewing the site on.

setup at new host and get all the fun and giggly bits working as normal.
when there is no longer any activity at the old host shutdown the
account. there'll be a little bit of overlap but no disruption. if
you're using database goodies ensure you update at the new host.
easy.

Eh ?
It is a little more complicated than that....
1. Get both hosts running, and your site up on the new site, probably need
to test it somehow (IP address?)
2. Mail, are you using pop3 to collect mail? Use IP address rather than
"mail.yourdomain" and setup two accounts on your computer.
3. Change the DNS over and then it willl slowly happen, it can take anywhere
upto a WEEK before people stop visiting your old site...

Set up two POP3 accounts on your email program, each using the IP address of
the two servers.
Its amazing how long mail will still turn up at the old IP.
I have seen mail still going to the old IP 5 days after the DNS was changed.
Another approach is to forward the mail from the old server to an email
address at a different domain.
If you want to get very clever you can reduce the refresh time of the DNS a
few days before the move and this will get things running more quickly.
If you are using a database you can load it on the new server and remotely
connect to it from the old one so you don;t have any synch problems.

Better still, forward all mail from old server to new server
IP.

If done properly should not take more than a couple of
minutes.
Ensure your dns has a small ttl - i.e. around 5 seconds -
the time for cached records to die so forcing all dns to do
a lookup on request. Then when you throw the switch you
should see an instant result - you may have to do a hard
refresh due to local cache store.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: changing host |

Hi Garba,
I didn't read all the replies, so some of this might be redundent... but do you
have any server-side scripting or databases? If it's strait HTML then simply
recreate the sites on the new host, copy the code, and transfer the nameservers
for the domain names. Before the transfer migrates through the Internet, it'll
hit the old site and when changed it'll hit the new site. Run both hosts
concurrently for a week or more, then disconnect the old host.
If you do have server-side programming or databases, basically the same as
above, but make sure all is working properly on the new host before dropping the
old sites. NOthing like moving the site, going live, and finding something is
terribly wrong. Also, remember version differences. There are minor
differences between PHP 3 and PHP 4, likewise with languages like Cold Fusion 4,
5, and MX. Your code when moved from one host to another might need some
tweaking to get going correctly based on the host's version or custom settings.
Make sure you test everything before transfering your domain names to point to
new Host.
If you don't mind, post your old and new/potential host, plus what stuff you're
running on the site. This'll help us pinpoint some issues you might run into.

Wise words.
With regard to the new host's configuration for PHP, I would check the
settings for register globals, and safe mode in particular.
I moved hosts not so long ago. The main change was to file paths in
scripts. Plus chmodding a directory or two.

both nameservers, I mean just add form new host and when those work just
remove ones from previous host?

I would go with the previous advice. Upload everything to the new host,
then change the nameservers. Personally I wouldn't enter both, never needed
to really.
You may or may not notice some glitches, but give it a day (from my
experience) and everything will be sweet.
Important to be patient with these things.

That will work. But the "when those work" is kindof hard to pin down. If a
site has already accessed your site then the address is probably stored in
cache. Your domain records have various "time to live" settings but they
are just suggestions. The arrangment works pretty well to hold down the re-
occurring traffic on the net but one of the drawbacks is that the sites
which visit you the most are the last to get any changes.
Ive heard hosting sites give estimates from hours to weeks. If you want to
be 90% sure then I owuld just plan to give it a month overlap.
