Best to check with your Hosting Company. They, most, have solutions built
into your package that can be One-Click installed.
Especially if they have Fantastico available to you.

Most forums, depending on user load, can be resource hogs.
Clean coding and installs are the key.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

In my opinions:

The best - vBulletin (http://www.vbulletin.com) - NOT FREE

Comparison of free ones:
PHPBB
- Easy To Skin
- Great Admin Controls
- Average In Security

INVISION BOARD
- Pain To Skin
- Excellent Admin Controls
- Above Average in Security

Based my experience, not always pleasant, I'd suggest you set up both. If
you have a win machine, download the win version of mysql and php, if
you're running linux, these items are probably already installed.

There's a problem with programs like these, they're drop in programs meant to
cater to a wide assortment of needs and skill levels.

You should throughly test each and decide which meets your
needs....important, the best way to test is to actually load the database
with dummy information, lots and lots of records...then test and see how
each responds.

It's better than deploying, finding a defect then trying to figure out how
to migrate to another bb or fix the current problems.

I've used phpbb and it's about the most reliable and there's good user info
and support available through forums etc.

Best bulletin board has to be HuzzieMB! Smile

  http://www.huzzie.org/

I'm seriously considering releasing the code behind it as it's pretty
neat. Pretty good security; very easy to customise; supports a small
subset of bbcode; no admin controls at all, but it's easy to admin via
phpMyAdmin; very basic but very easy to use.

I've been playing with SMF quite a bit, lately. <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.simplemachines.org" target="_blank">www.simplemachines.org</a>

Converted to it from phpBB and got a lot of good comments.

Looks like invision is a rip off of phpbb.
I haven't worked with invision so I don't know nuthin about setting it up.
But Phpbb is easy to setup and maintain.
I have it on my site and have had no problems with it.

If your hosting company has mysql then all you would need to do is to have
them set it up for you.
Some now even include it with cpanel.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
