First you need to use a 'transitional' doctype, then in your markup
<a href = "othersite" target = "_blank">

yes - perfectly, but please think on this: <

Thanks William,
I had considered that myself. It's a very valid point, having "lost"
pages myself this way (you only have to shut the wrong window and all
your back data is lost)
Perhaps it's better to just say before the link to hit "back" when finished.
Again, Thanks.
Jez.

It works the other way too.
On one of my sites I open pictures in the same window. My mate was looking
at it, and went to close the window with the picture, which would have shut
down the browser completely. To be perfectly frank, I have done it
myself, on my own site!
He said he was used to seeing pictures open in a new window, and used to
closing this window.
In this particular case I just link to the image (cos it's very easy!!!) but
If I incorporated it in a page, then the user would be less likely to close
the window thinking it was just a picture window.

I have grappled with this problem since inception.
Another problem is that... I'm pretty sure that the
new browser window will be targeted by Pop-up killers.
Personally I don't see any way around opening new
windows when you send someone away from your site.
If you don't, then people think they are still on your site.
Which can give the appearance of "your" site having
a totally "new" navigation scheme.
Also, I have heard that you should "never" let your
visitor back into their environment. If they "have" to
click the back button to get back to your site, I think
you have lost them. By popping up a new window,
even if they get confused, eventually they are going to
close out the new window, and "your" site will be
there staring them in the face.

I'm kinda the same. I usually make links out of the site open in a new
window. Don't want to lose the punter altogether!
Speaking of which, there seems to be a convention for naming the new window
by a name beginning with an underscore. I just call them an appropriate
name without the underscore.
When I first did it, I called them all "new", then I realised that this made
all the links open in the same window (which you may or may not desire) so I
then gave them different names so they opened in their own window.
This can result in lots of windows being opened.
In some ways this can be useful. Pictures of products for example. Sure
there may be eight windows opened, but it is then easy to click on them to
have another look at the pictures.
This is one of the few areas where I think javascript type pop-ups can be
useful.

Thanks charles... I didn't have my windows "named" at all.
I gotta go back and ad that in.

did I ever tell you (I'm going to anyway so sit back, shut-up and listen)
about the time I was researching some travel arrangements. two different
sites (probably railtrack and national coach), scanning back and forth, two
browser instances active, checking journey times/costs etc. both sites
opened their time-tables in 'new' windows - ok back then I suppose except
that both sites used the same naming conventions for this 'new' window - the
two timetables kept over-writing each other - doh

I see you have already had a lot of useful advice on your question.
Can I just add that it will help everybody if make your subject more
descriptive. Something like "new page links" makes it easier to search
old posts.
