Archived from groups: alt>apache>configuration (more info?)

Hi, I'm new to Apache, so sorry if my questions are dumb.

First off, I am replacing a win98 pc with one with xp home installed. I know
I need to upgrade to xp pro to get IIS as PWS won't run. However, I don't
really want to go down the upgrade route unless I have to.

I need to run a server on my computer to develop/test my pages prior to
upload. I also need to run .asp scripts and connect to access 2000
databases, and I'm not absolutely sure Apache will do this.

So far, I've got Apache and managed to configure it to run my .htm pages on
http://localhost no problems. When I try to run an .asp page all I see is
the page code. I understand from the Apache faq that this is because the
mod_perl application is not installed.

I've downloaded the file that ends in .tar.tar and winzip won't unzip it. So
where do I go from here? Will Apache run my .asp scripts that PWS had no
problems with?

Help!

Thanks,

Apache won't do that. Period. You need ASP? You need Windows.

Scratch "Windows" and replace with "IIS"

....the OP already said they were on a Windows platform.

hmm.. after I posted the last message, I happened to do a quick search:

and

As usual, you've been fooled by the name, as many others. That
won't run ASP pages, only perl script. The only things that run
ASP (as in Microsoft ASP) pages is SunONE (formerly Chili!ASP), but
it will work only for very simple pages and in a quite crappy way.
IMHO is not worth the price.

No. Perl is a perfectly valid ASP scripting language, as is PHP - as
long as you have the correct ISAP filter installed. It just happens that
99% of people use VBScript to do it. The think with VBScript is you can
use it for *both* server and client side, while perl or PHP would need
help on the client end from something like javascript.

No, it's not. If you want ASP, get XP Pro and install it with IIS and
ASP. If you don't want to run IIS, then use php, perl, python, etc.
