I have mandrake 9.2 x86 system with apache 2. If i download the latest
apache 2 version and compile it and install it using
--prefix=/usr/lib/apache2 which is where i find apache2 to be now will
it just overwrite my current apache2 or do i need to uninstall apache 2
that was installed by mandrake first? I'm wanting to install the newer
version because mandrake didnt install the mod_deflate module.
Thanks
Eric

I think that Mandrake uses the same layout of files, config and the like
of RedHat, so you'd better use the --with-layout=RedHat.
Check in the config.layout file if that's the correct one and
eventually edit it.

These prefix things always confuse me, I am never sure how to determine an
appropriate prefix. I copied the RedHat layout to a new section and called
it Mandrake. Should i uninstall apache first?

Is there a tool that will scan a system and determine the current layout?
That would be very handy so you could use the same layout as was already
setup by Mandrake or whatever distro you use. Then upgrading would be much
smoother without mixing up files and so on.

No. Is just a matter of looking into the directory/ies and see if the
files are there or not.
It doesn't take more than 5 minutes.
