Okay Im in the process of making a website. Im making the main page in
photoshop and then ill cut out the pieces and form a webpage like I always
do. Anyway, I have a picture of an earth on a box that goes into 2 other
boxes with gaps in between. Would I be able to align that properly ? And if
so, could someone please tell me the method in which I would go about doing
something like that. Would I use tables ?
Im sure you dont have any clue what Im talking about, so you can check it
out yourself. I started off with just the one piece of the earth like it is
here: http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/BizcardFXblack.gif
And then as I went on I got the idea to make the 2 other pieces, but in
order for it to work it would have to be aligned exactly how it is now. Its
here: http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/BizcardFXfullearth.gif
Would this be possible, Im not sure if I could do it using my knowledge of
web design.
Also, Id like a little input as to whether that is even a cool effect or not
? it might be a bit overboard.
As far as how I was going to design it before the earths. I was gonna do the
top all in cut up gif's and then just use tables for the bottom half. A gif
for the top of the table and a background image for the inside of the table.
The left Table or square is going to be used for Banner links to my other
sites and possibly some Latest News or something along those lines, I would
just use the picture of the earth as the background image for that table as
well.. I just dont think I would be able to align it right.
Anyway, thanks alot for your help.

PS. The site is no where near finished, but if anyone were to have any
critiques on what I have now (or ideas), I would be happy to hear them. =) >> Stay informed about: alignment question |

1. check out the table settings: cell padding, cell spacing etc.
2. If you use dreamweaver, it automatically inserts into black cells.
3. check w3c HTML specs for alignment attributes. It's hard to see what't
going on on your gif without seeing some sample code.

Thats fucking cool. I did it.
And I did it with tables ! Waaa hoooooo. Okay yea I know, tables are for
tabular data and CSS is for format. But damnit it works. It works in
Netscape, Internet Explorer and AOL. The only thing is that in Netscape the
bottom text menu table comes out the wrong size but I can fix that. Anyway,
if you want to see it, its at http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/ Any input
would be appreciated. Im pretty happy with it so far, I have it set up so
that I'll make somewhere around $100 for every business card I make. Anyway,
Ive been up all night working on it. Time for sleepy. Now that im an
official webmaster, Ill be in here more often. =)
Signing off,

Eric Jarvis posted this link a few days ago:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/" target="_blank">http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/</a>
Navigate to the page
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/complexspiral/demo.html" target="_blank">http://www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/complexspiral/demo.html</a>
As far as I can tell it has exactly what you want. The bad thing? It
doesn't use tables so you'd need to use <div> tags and css positioning,
and you need a workaround for some dodgy implementation of css in IE.
But I think that is the effect you are looking for.
As for the design in general... Pretty good (although I assume it will
be a liquid design, that is, take up the full width of the page - don't
worry, this is easy peaser with css! The only thing is how much black
border you have - I would make it much thinner (you also get more room
that way) and possibly make it a shade of grey. Black doesn't really go
with your banner and navigation. I would make all your borders a fairly
light grey, including that fountain fill, and make the darker grey box
(I assume that's where the content goes) a lighter grey still. That also
means that there will be more contrast between your background and text,
which is good.

That is a very cool effect. But I was really just looking for a way to make
the images/tables align properly.I dont think I would want the earth image
to remain in the same spot as the page scrolled. Would it be possible for me
to simply align it all perfectly using CSS ?

Nah, I was just planning on centering what you saw and making the background
black. If I wanted to make it liquid I would have to start all over wouldnt
I ? Otherwise it would severly distort my graphics, right ? I have alway
make my pages for 1064 screenwidth, but have leanr

OOPS I accidentally sent that first message by accident. I was not finished.
Heres the finished post. =)
That is a very cool effect and I will use it for future projects. But I was
really just looking for a way to make
the images/tables align properly. I dont think I would want the earth image

I wasnt quite sure if you meant borders as in the actual borders or the
background. But I expanded what would be my tables and made all the borders
a lighter grey, and I do like it better. its here
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/BizcardFXblack2.gif" target="_blank">http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/BizcardFXblack2.gif</a>

I was planning on making the text that will be typed into the darker grey
box, white. As shown in my new gif. I dont think grey would be good for the
background because well, I just dont like an all grey background. But what
do you think about it being white ?
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/BizcardFXwhite.gif" target="_blank">http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/BizcardFXwhite.gif</a>
It was actually originally white when I first started. I think I might like
it better. Seems to make it appear "cleaner".
I was thinking, If I were to make the two tables the exact same size and
then align the blue table all the way to the left of the page and then make
some sort of big blank spacer for inbetween the menu and tables as well as a
spacer for inbetween the tables or just use one table with three columns and
specify an exact pixel width for the center column, it might align. ya think
? wheeeeewww that was a big breath. lol. Always happens when I start
thinking.

Possible, but difficult. It was never the intention of the web that the
page display perfectly to the last pixel.
You would be lucky to be able to get css or tables to present your
design pixel-perfect regardless of browser, resolution, OS, text-size etc.

No. You have a thin bit of image to the right of "impression" which, if
made into a separate image, could be made to scale horizontally as much
as you like, which would let the banner bit move to take up the full
screen. It should be fairly easy to make at least one part of the
navigation bar adjustible in width.
To keep your alignments nice, the "bottom" part of the earth box, that
blue part, would have to remain a fixed width, but it would be
relatively easy to make the dark grey box stretch to the edge.
> Otherwise it would severly distort my graphics, right ?
No. The secret is to have a little bit of your graphic just horizontal,
repeating horizontally or just blank colour. More by luck than good
management, I think your design has enough to make it liquid.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: alignment question |

Cool. I think this is the one Im gonna go with:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/BizcardFXstars.gif" target="_blank">http://alabama.shnw.net/~bizcard/BizcardFXstars.gif</a> I think its much
improved. Im gonna look into that liquid stuff. That would definitely be
alot better. Would you happen to know of a good site I should go to to learn
more about it ? Dont go find one or anything, just if you happen to know
one.
Thanks again, you have been helpful.

Dont worry too much about the tables vs css for layout args.
Do what you find works for you! After all, while some in this group will say
do not do it - (use tables) - if you look around the web you will find
yourself in good company. Most web sites use tables for layout. Many of the
biggest web design companies use table for layout. Most big businesses use
tables for layout as do most government sites. - So, even though some would
say it is wrong to use tables for layout - most people do - so welcome to
the club!
BTW - page looking good!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: alignment question |

bah humbug - don't listen to old dinosaurs like Bill - he's hoping to retire
soon (to a sun-drenched paradise with his every whim catered for by tanned
beauties) and would rather just pretend that css is not coming anytime soon.

Hi,
Just wondering why the #1 business card design company doesn't have a
#1 domain name like <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.businesscards.com" target="_blank">www.businesscards.com</a> or something.
I wouldn't put that on my site unless I was actually #1. Just my op.

All of that is correct except for one thing - it will be one tanned beauty
who also happens to be my wife - (which is why it will be one tanned beauty

Never said that - said he would find himself in good company. - what they do
might in the words of the few be not good - that does no alter the fact they
are good company :-0

We may not like the smell but the sheer number implies they cannot all be
wrong?

Were #1 because we make each business card as if it were our own for the
cheapest price, like it says on the page, were not however #1 because of our
domain. Although I do like my domain better. Plus, at BizcardFX you dont pay
for your artwork until you've approved it. And we design and ship our cards
out faster than any other business card company. Most are over 2 weeks and I
have seen none that ship in less than 5 days as we do.
Also, Businesscards.com only prints in 1 and 2 color offereing black & any
standard color, red & blue, burgundy & gray, brown & green, purple & teal
only, I print in 4color giving you limitless options.. Plus they charge
almost $40 more for just 2colors with no gloss front and back per 1000. I
charge $40 less with full color and gloss front and back. Plus, their
templates suck. Perhaps you should have chose a better site to prove your
point. But thanks for your opinion Ill consider changing it. =)

Hi,
I didn't even know there was a businesscards.com. I just picked the
name out of the air.
My point is that "#1" is not really a subjective thing. Are you the
"#1" in lowest pricing? Clients per year? What? It doesn't add a
lot to say that if you don't back it up with something.
