Hi Group,

I wonder if you could review this site for me please?

http://www.filmsonglass.co.uk/

We have just had it made and are pleased with the look of it but have
just paid for some search engine inclusion (inktomi fast submit or
something like that) and whilst we are listed we are getting no hits.

Is there a reason for this? Is it because there are no alt tags or
highlightable text or is it just that we haven't given the search
engines sufficient time to index our site?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jez.

It takes days or weeks to be listed in search engines, depending on the
search engine. If you were just submitted, you wouldn't be in them yet.

You said you were listed. What do you mean by that?

Err, it would not load for me and i could not see anything (IE6 Windows
XP Pro, SP1) so I had a look at the HTML, got flash disabled myself -
and in the html you lack a doc type amongst other things.

Cheers.

Blank white page - very minimilist

here's your reason:

<script language="JavaScript1.2">
<!--

if (screen.width==800||screen.height==600) //if 800x600
window.location.replace("SMLINDEX.htm")

else if (screen.width==640||screen.height==480) //if 640x480
window.location.replace("SMLINDEX.htm")

else if (screen.width==1024||screen.height==768) //if 1024x768
window.location.replace("BIGINDEX.htm")

else //if all else
window.location.replace("BIGINDEX.htm")

//-->
</script>

SE bots and me do not tolerate this type of nonsense.

Your page(s) must work with a HTML enabled user agent. Everything else is
optional fluff.

Oh no, it's ALL in flash :~(

Yes it's because the whole site is in flash, so there's nothing for the search engines to look for.

My advice - scrap the whole thing and have it rebuilt in nice simple HTML.

OK I enabled flash and here's what I think:

There's too much white space, the flash just kinda floats in a sea of white.

The text is in flash - pet hate of mine, I like copying and pasting
contact info from a site and saving it for reference. But that could
just be me.

Text also jumps to uppercase now again. In fact the content could be
done with being displayed properly, more emphasis on the typography.

There's really not much information on the site. I would really add lots
more information about the company, the processes they use, clients,
quotes from past customers etc.

The gallery is a pain in the arse to navigate through and does not do
the pictures justice, I can barely see the produce. How about some close
up shots of the etching at a descent res?

Clinchéd use of clip art dotted about the site (such as the address
thingy on the contact page), and why does is some text animate for no
reason?

It also really lacks colour and visual impact.

Code could be better too, no doc type for instance and loads of
inexcusable mistakes such as: <title>Untitled Document</title>

Certainly.

What? You hijack my browser? How dare you!

Once I resized my window back to the size I like, your content no
longer fits. If you hadn't asked for the critique, I would have been
gone in a second.

Besides, your width="487" height="436" movie looks really /silly/
sitting in the middle of my 1280x1024 screen.

I hope you didn't pay more than a few dollars/pounds/euros for this crap.

It is because
a) frames
b) Flash
c) needs JavaScript ~15% visitors will not be able to see it.
d) search engines do /not/ have JavaScript. 'Nuf said?

It means that it was a paid inclusion and that the search engines we
paid for MSN and so on have included the url but nothing else.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Google has found your site and indexed it. Search for the string "city
scientific ltd" (with the quotes) or 'filmsonglass' and your site comes
up.

Sadly, however, _all_ that googlebot can see is:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<title>City Scientific Ltd</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta NAME="keywords" CONTENT="design, glass, manifestation, window,
filming, logo, decorative, solar, film, glare, heat, fade, reduction">
<meta name="description" content="">
<meta NAME="Rating" CONTENT="General">
<meta NAME="Robots" CONTENT="All">
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Given that google no-longer pays much, if any, attention to 'meta' tags
you're unlikely to figure in any searches other than the ones I gave. If
you're interested in hits from search engines then I'm afraid you're
going to have to throw it all away and start again. Sorry.

Ok everyone. Thanks for looking. It does look like we have been ripped
off. The chances are that we will have to try to fix this ourselves - is
it modifiable?

We did pay a fair amount for this and didn't realise all the problems
(why would we?) that you have pointed out.

Any _constructive_ advice on fixes or modifications would be gratefully
received!

Include the keywords, the keywords that people use to find your site, on
your home page visible and relevant in the text. Not in Flash or images.

If you need hits right away, use a service like Overture ot Google's
adwords and pay per click. Make your keywords specific so that your bids
are low in price.

Not really. Note that a replacement site that shows up high in google
wouldn't be as pretty (to some eyes) but would be more easily navigable
& might even say what the films cost and how to buy them...

Actually, I want some screening window film - do you sell in domestic
quantities?

Hi Jacqui or (maybe) Pete,

Who says advertising doesn't pay! Smile Yes we do sell in small amounts.

I don't understand then how Madico get the ranking that they do. They
have no text or alt tags either! Madico are a very large competitor /
supplier.
