I have a Problem with an install of Windows XP on several machines.

SMTP service starts fine, RPC services start fine, World WIde Web Publishing
& FTP Publishing will not start. They return the error "Error 3: The system
cannot find the path specified"

I checked C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv all the relevant files appear to be
there.
I also checked C:\inetpub... its all there as well.

I checked the event log when I try to start the services
1st msg
The FTP Publishing service was successfully sent a start control

2nd msg
The FTP Publishing service entered the stopped state

3rd msg
The FTP Publishing service terminated with the following error:
System could not find the path specified.

What path is the error refering to?
Also if I do a re-install of IIS it solved the problem, however I will have
to do this on a number of machines I would prefer to find out what is
causing the problem

any bump in the right direction will be most helpful

regards
Scott

First, always post the full error message. Second, use the Event Log
ID and the Source and look it up:

ok,

The source of the error is Service control Manager
Event ID 7023

The DEscription
The World Wide Web publishing service terminated with the following error.
The system cannot fine the path specified.

When I go to eventid.net and search the following page is returned
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=7023&source=Service+Control+Manager" target="_blank">http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=7023&source=Service+Control+Manager</a>

When I look at the Knowledge base article
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311625" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311625</a> which refers
to the problem as I dont have a backup of the metabase I have to reinstall
the service to solve the problem.
I was hoping for an easier way.

thanks for the info
