I am new to IIS and ASP.NET programming.
I want to develop and test what I develop (thats all) on my XP-Prof machine. I have three machines connected (IMac, ME, and XP-prof)
My first ASP.Net program (following directions in a text book I have) was placed properly in the c:\Inetpub\wwwroot directory in a new folder with the project name.
But, when going to another attached machine and accessing the web site (using a browser and the XP machines IP address, all I could access were default file names in wwwroot. I couldn't get to the project. So then I started messing with the IIS properties. Now I cannot get to or even create any new ASP.Net Web applications. The error I get (from the IDE when I try to create a new ASP.Net project) is:
The default Web access mode for this project is set to file share, but the project folder at 'http://localhost/LeeTest1' cannot be opened with the path 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\LeeTest1'. The error returned was:
Unable to create Web project "LeeTest1". The file path 'c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\LeeTest1 does not correspont to the URL 'http://localhost/LeeTest1'. The two need to map to the same server location. HTTP Error 404: Object Not Found.
Is these a document someplace that will tell me what the properties for IIS should be so I can start 'messing around' with ASP.NET development? Or, is there something mess up with the settings in the VS.NET? Please HELP.

Try reading the VS.Net product documentation. It has info on how to do all
this.
From a default IIS installation, you shouldn't need to mess around with any
IIS properties. I've literally just installed IIS, installed VS.Net, and
created projects ready to be run/debug with no problems.
So, I would suggest that you un-mess your property changes, whatever they
are, and try again.
Do you happen to have URLScan running on this machine and rejecting .tmp
extension? It could cause that error. Are you publishing your VS.Net
project via UNC or FPSE? If UNC, do you have a wwwroot$ UNC share on the
server and are you in the "VS Developer" group? Do you have FPSE installed
on both the client and the server? All this (and more) are in VS.Net
documentation and troubleshooting.

Hello Lee,
I think you can't run ASP.net on Win XP. at least not ASP.net 2003. Try using Webmatrix to create and test your ASP.net application.
http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/
If you could find a way to run ASP.net on Win XP, please let me know, I also want to do that. but I guess currenlty you can't install IIS 6.0 on Win XP. You need server.

Try this:
Open properties for your web site (Web Sites, Default Web Site, right
click, properties) Then go to the Home Directory tab. Check to be sure
that the local path matches what the system is expecting
(c:\inetpub\wwwroot)
