Post subject: Web page Error - "The system cannot find the file specified" Error
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis, others (more info?)

All,
We have a web application and are facing a strange problem at one of our
customer's intranet site. When people try to access certain web pages
(.asp), they are getting "HTTP 500 - Internal server error (Page cannot be
displayed)". We tried removing the "Show friendly HTTP error messages" from
the browser and got "The system cannot find the file specified" error. We
verified the IIS logs of the same request it showed up as "HTTP 200"
successful. This is a very random behavior and doesn't happen always.
Please let us know if someone has any idea about what is the problem.
Following the information about the IE version and IIS version.

Client:
Internet Explorer - 6.0.2800.1106
Updated Versions: SP1; Q291940; Q330994; Q822925;
Q832894; Q837009; Q867801; Q833989;
Server:
Microsoft Windows 2000
5.00.2195
Service Pack 4
IIS - 5.0

Thanks,
Praveen.

Ken,
Thanks for the reply. I checked the Event log, but there is nothing in
the event log also.

Thanks,

Wait a minute.

You are saying that the user is seeing 500 Internal Server Error, but IIS is
logging 200 OK? Are you sure about that?

That's right, IIS records "200" status for the operation and all code
written in the asp is executed correctly. We have even tried monitoring the
network traffic between the browser and IIS and found that IIS returns
"500 - The system cannot find the file specified".

The above page was doing a "Response.Redirect ()" at the end of execution,
we are able to reduce the frequency of this issue by making the redirect
from the client side "location.href =url ". But that did not explain why it
is happening!

We have earlier seen similar issue with the IIS response (system cannot find
the file specified) when the URL (querystring) of page is abnormally long.
So thinking it is an issue with the size of the http request, we have been
trying to reduce the size of cookies (session based) and querystrings used
for the page. All of this only helped us to reduce the frequency of
occurring, but did not fix the issue.

Hope this information helps!

Thanks,
Praveen.

Hi Praveen,

I'd suggest you set the web site's application protection to low(IIS
process) and then use filemon to trace which file it's look for when
the 'The system cannot find the file specified' is reproduced.

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml

Add inetinfo.exe as the filter string in filemon toolbar.

Let us know if you get any progress or findings.
Thanks.

Hi,
We tried running Filemon but never got any error status message (FILE
NOT FOUND), we only got "SUCCESS" or "BUFFER OVERFLOW" status messages. But
in the client IE we got the "HTTP 500 - Internal server error" ("The system
cannot find the file specified" when we removed the "Show friendly HTTP
error messages" from the browser settings). The IIS logs still recorded "200
SUCCESS" status, there absolutely no "500" status error in the IIS logs. We
also used NetMon to monitor the network packets, and found the GET request
for the ".asp" page is executed successfully, but the response sent from IIS
was "Status Code = 500 - Internal Server Error". Please find the details of
the network trace below, it will be great if you can help us to resolve this
issue:

Hi Praveen,

I got a little clue. Some former cases show this kind of problem may
be caused by some third-party ISAPI filters(e.g Fileup.dll). Please
open the site's property->ISAPI filter tab to check if there is any
special one. Also open the server's property->WWW service master
setting to check if there is any third-party global filters installed.

If there are, you may temp remove them to test the result.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the response. We found that there was an ISAPI filter
installed for FileUPEE and once we removed the filter we did not get the
"page cannot be displayed" error. And once we put the ISAPI filter back we
got we were able to repeat the "page cannot be displayed" error. But this
error comes up only from a particular machine with a particular IE version

(Internet Explorer - 6.0.2800.1106
Updated Versions: SP1; Q291940; Q330994; Q822925;
Q832894; Q837009; Q867801; Q833989;).

If we try the same operation from another machine with a different IE
version

(Internet Explorer - 6.0.2800.1106
Updated Versions: SP1;).

We are not able to repeat the error, irrespective of if the ISAPI filter is
installed or not. So do you think it has something to do with the
combination of ISAPI filter and a particular version of IE. It will be great
if you can through some light on the version issue of IE apart from the
ISAPI filters installed at the server.

Your support is appreciated.

Thanks,

Praveen.

Praveen,

Yes, looks like the filter function has some compatibility issue with
new released IE patch, but I have no info on this since it's a
third-party one. You may contact its vendor to report this issue.
Probably they've already noticed this problem and may release a new
version.

Thanks.
