The continuing saga... I'm writing this up as a "how-to" guide for
other business people like myself who haven't been provided with the
user name and password needed to change your DNS info at
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://manage.opensrs.net" target="_blank">http://manage.opensrs.net</a>
1) Know what you need. For us, having access to live phone support for
the rare problem when we're out of town and without internet access is
critical.
2) Really check out target providers.
* Test their phone support as if you were a customer. Ask about an
easy problem you've had. What's the quality of their answer? If you
had to leave a message, when do they call back? When they called back,
did they answer the question?
* Test email support in the same way. If they refuse to answer the
question because you aren't a current customer, think about a
different provider.
* Where are they physically located? If you know, and they turn out to
be a bad selection, you can at least go see them so you can talk it
over with them over donuts or cookies.
3) Know who your "Registrar of Record:" is. Go to whois.net or
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.allwhois.com." target="_blank">www.allwhois.com.</a> Go to your registrar of record's web site and look
under support. Mine was Tucows.
The Tucows online support area provided some clues, but no
instructions for site owners with non-responsive web hosts
("resellers" in Tucows terminology). I emailed support about this
issue, but didn't get any new info. The key was to get someone on the
phone. Tucows doesn't have phone support or a full-time receptionist;
pick Sales to get a live body. Persistance pays; don't let them pass
you back to the circular phone menus. Per his instructions, I wrote a
note requesting your domain user name and password and faxed it as
requested.
4) Be a responsible business owner. Write a complaint letter to
compliance.RemoveThis@opensrs.org as Tina suggested.
Look for the remaining steps in the next post.

FYI to the other responders. Thanks, I've already selected a new host
provider.
