Hi,

Does search engine ranking have anything to do with which company hosts
the site?

Say if I have a site hosted by Yahoo and it ranks pretty high at Yahoo
for targeted keywords. Then, if I switch the site's host to a different
reputable host, will that change the rankings in any way at Yahoo?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Terry

I have never heard of that happening. But with all of the SEO superstitions
out there who knows. I heard stepping on a crack would get your ranking
lowered at google.

I think the host has some importance - an unreliable, or a host that isn't
easy to reach by Google (in CA?) it also seems that one server a company I
worked for owned, got black listed - and nothing they could do would improve
its rankings... it seemed to be the whole server...

If google's algorithm was affected by something like 'hosting company', it
wouldn't be working properly.

There are many algorithms that go to make up a search engine.

I've never heard of site location affecting the crawling activity of an
spider but rumours do surface from time to time indicating that the value
of inbound links is dependent on neighbourhood - e.g. links from sites at
the same ip-address carry less value than others.

How do you do the reverse DNS? I pinged my site and got
AA.BB.CC.DD

but if I reverse DNS it, I just get the name of the server at my host.
