All of a sudden the WWW publishing service doesn't start up. The IIS Admin
is fine, but WWW Publishing stays with the "Starting" status and never
actually starts. This is a big problem for me because I need WWW
Publishing for my offline website development.
I have tried the following to fix the problem:
1) Restart IIS. - freezes when it gets to WWW Publishing restart.
2) Remove/Reinstall IIS - removes ok but then freezes up when reinstalling.
3) Install SP2 - does not work, tells me I need some of the lastest WinXP
updates before I can install it.
4) Windows Update - does not work, the MS update site returns me a
meaningless error without explanation.
In other words, I'm stuck. Any other ideas or must I resort to a reinstall
of my operating system?
Thanks,

Anything in the event viewer? I have a client pc that cannot retrieve
updates either. It states that the active x components don't work and
that the browser settings need to be expanded to allow active x. They
ar and it still doesn't work.
I would reinstall XP.

Well, yeah, of course. If it doesn't start, trying again doesn't
mysteriously alter something to make it work.
>2) Remove/Reinstall IIS - removes ok but then freezes up when reinstalling.
Are you in the Northeast? If so, move the computer indoors so it
doesn't freeze. If not, or it's already indoors, you'd need to tell
us more than "freezes up" to get a diagnosis.

This wouldn't have any effect anyway.

Ah, a meaningless error. Those are handled by the Meaningless Error
department, third door on your right.

A reinstall isn't indicated, and may or may not work. But then,
nothing is indicated, because all you've told us is that the service
doesn't start. If I told you only that my car wouldn't start, would
you know it was because my neighbor removed the engine last night?
Tell us specific error messages. Including those in the event log.

I did - and it fixed the problem!

Have you never found with an IT problem, the last resort of a reboot /
restart will sometimes do the trick? It's always worth a go if nothing else
works.

Please tell me you don't work in support? With your sarcastic,
condescending attitude I would be amazed.
It freezes up, ok? It means just that. Freezes up. Locks up. Halts. How
many different ways can I put this? It stops moving. It starts installing
but then stops half way through without any error message and goes no
further. I have given you all the information I have.

Isn't SP2 supposed to fix a few known bugs in XP? Isn't that the point of a
Service Pack?

Well there was an error code but the MS Support site gave absolutely no
description for it. Hence, to me, it was a meaningless error.

Judging from your manners, I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually did
that to you.

I've told you all I know. And the event log had nothing pertaining to IIS
or WWW Publishing in it. Otherwise I would have posted that.
Before reading your "helpful" reply, I've reinstalled XP and it's fixed the
problem, so I'm afraid your annoying sarcasm has been fruitless.
Have a nice day.

Sometimes this can happen when port 80 is in use.
