This may sound like a really stupid question but I was reading something
about CSS today and it mentioned that the viewer could "remove" the style
sheet.

How do they do this? I would like to test my sites to see how they appear to
those
that have 'removed' the style sheet.

In Opera, just switch to User Mode under View >> Style

For internet explorer? try this toolbar ...

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/resources/toolbar/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.nils.org.au/ais/web/resources/toolbar/index.html</a>

Thanks for the suggestion William but no thanks. Toolbars are evil. *grin*
I won't install any toolbar anymore, not even Google's or Ebay's.

There has got to be another way to do it.

One way is to use Firefox or Mozilla and get the Web Developer extension.
You'd be amazed what you can do with it, including disabling stylesheets
and testing various accessibility and validation issues.

ok - know what you mean, but this one is not evil.

As others have indicated, Firefox/Mozilla and Opera have built-in
facilities for this.

Not sure of another way for IE. hmmm maybe you could build your own
default style sheet and use that, but this seems like a lot of work.

In IE you can go tools->inter options->accessibility and check the
relevant boxes.

Other browsers have similar ways to ignore suggested styles, colours,
fonts and the like.

It can be very revealing!

IE 3 was the only version of IE to have an option in preferences to
disable stylesheets. The option is still there in more versions of IE, but
it's not in preferences -- you have to dig about in the registry to toggle
it.

In "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main" there is
a value called "Use StyleSheets" (if there isn't, it can be created). If
it's set to "yes" then CSS is enabled. If it's set to "no" then CSS is
disabled.

(Considering setting it to "no" on all the PCs at work to encourage the
switch to Firefox)
