When users key an unregistered domain in the browser and get a page not
found, is that info logged anywhere. I would like to know if any of the
alternate domain names, for my sites, are being tried by users and how
often.
Does that make sense??
Any help appreciated

Dave,
I don't think it is logged anywhere. Unless that domain is on some server.

Maybe it's logged by MSN if they're the default search for the browser.

No. It's a local transaction between them and their DNS servers.
There's no Internet wide logging. DOmains are cheap... why not
just register the others ?

Because it's not always easy to guess what the others are. Say you want to know
how people mis-spell example.com:
exemple
exaple
ecample
ezample
examole
exsmple
exaample
Which is most common? Hard to know, unless you log mistakes. For a six-letter
url, if you do one for each letter missed, one letter added and two adjacent,
that's 24 variants, not counting all the different domain endings. It could get
expensive.

Alice,
Yes that's one of the problems I have as one of my clients has chosen to
spell their company name incorrectly, as far as the dictionary is concerned.
There are several possible combinations and if you add on all the domain
endings things could get pricey.
Looks like we will just have to try it and see.
Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Even spelling correctly can be a problem. I have a client whose name ends in
NightclubAndGrille.com. I suggested they regsiter TownNameNightclubs.com
(TownName being the locality.) But, the owner has a huge ego and wants his
name in the URL. So, someone hears the name of the site, or they try to use
it in a radio ad, and inevitably someone will leave off the "e". Too
cheap/stupid to even register the other as a redirect or use the town name
version in advertising since it's easier to remember.

you might want to try googling for the various spellings of a word to get an
idea of the frequency of misspelling. >> Stay informed about: Unregistered Domains |

Hi,
Regarding the cost of domain names, godaddy.com is $8.95 annually, so
registering 24 domain names wouldn't be a huge amount of money.
If you want to see variations on portions of domain names, or check to
see if a domain name is registered, go to http://www.domainsurfer.com.
In the below example, domainsurfer.com would show you all domain names
beginning with "ex" if you enter "ex^" (without the quotes).
Best regards,
Michael Murray

Rackshack has just started selling them for $5.
Lose a little on each one, make it up in volume.
