I have a PC and a Mac in a workgroup network. The PC is the server running
IIS 5.1 on XP Professional. The Mac is OS 10.3. I have enabled Port 80 via
Windows Firewall.
From the PC I can access the website via localhost, machine name, and IP
address. However, I am only able to access the website via IP from the Mac.
2 questions. (1) Can I set a different port in IIS 5.1 so I don't have to
open up 80? (2) How can I access the website from the Mac via machine name?
I don't want to have to use a static IP because I need to be dynamic for
other reasons. >> Stay informed about: Unable to access workgroup website from Mac IE via compute.. |

a) Yes - just change it in IIS Manager
b) Unless you have a DNS server, the Mac isn't going to know anything about
the "name" of your Windows box (Windows boxes can use NetBIOS or DNS to
locate themselves). There is a "hosts" file on your Mac where you can enter
a DNS name and point it to the IP address of your Windows box (not going to
help if the IP address of your PC is dynamic). If the IP address of your
Wintel box is dynamic, you need a DNS server that supports dynamic updates.

I am unable to find it in IIS Manager. I know where to do so in IIS 6.0, but
can't find it in 5.1.
Where would the Mac host files be located at and do you have an example of
how to edit them?

a) Locate "default website site" in IIS Manager -> right-click and choose
"Properties". On the "web site" tab, change the port number from 80.
b) I don't know.

b) I'd hazard a guess at /etc/hosts - since OS X is basically a Unix variant
now. Could be wrong there - do a search on the system. most host files
contain instruction on how to edit.

Thanks, I didn't realize that you couldn't change the port for individual
sites on 5.1.
I haven't the slightest clue on how to get to /etc/hosts on a Mac. Any
quick help?

I'm afraid I haven't run a mac since my iMac blew up in 2002 - so I'm not
really sure how you do it, however here are some web resources which may be
useful

Hi,
You have not considered to use a free DNS service such as no-ip.com or
