Hello,
I saw a bunch of excellent and concise advice on the subject of setting up a
web site in the thread 'simple question from a new guy'.
I'm hoping there are some UK webmasters in here who can give me similar
advice - a good place to register a domain, and a reliable company that
offers web hosting.
I'm helping to set up a web site for a small museum. The site won't have a
great number of visitors, and to start with it will be quite a basic
text-and-gif site. I probably will need less than 10mb.
However, I have little idea how the site might expand and develop in the
future - ideally I'd be looking for a hosting company that offers a
reasonably priced basic package, where I don't have to pay for all the bells
and whistles that I don't need at the moment - but where it would be easy to
upgrade should I need to. In particular, I don't want to be paying for loads
of webspace (or bandwidth) that I don't need - but I'd like to be able to
expand to more space later if I need it.
Obviously, I'm also looking for a very reliable company with reliable
servers.
I hope there's a few people out there who can give me some much needed
advice on this.
Thanks,
James Evans >> Stay informed about: UK - request for advice |

You might consider a *free* site offered by the Newsquest newspaper
group's "Communigate" if they cover your area, see
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.communigate.co.uk/." target="_blank">http://www.communigate.co.uk/.</a> Your URL will look like
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.communigate.co.uk/myarea/mymuseum." target="_blank">http://www.communigate.co.uk/myarea/mymuseum.</a> You don't have much
control over layout, and you can't advertise or sell things, but the
programming is very easy (no HTML) and there are a number of useful
features like event calendar, message board, guest book etc. They also
seem to get your site onto serach engines.
It's a good way to get a presence on the web quickly, while you think
at your leisure about how to do it "properly".

Check out <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.easyspace.co.uk" target="_blank">www.easyspace.co.uk</a> they are one of only a few UK registrars for
..com names, if this is what you are after. They are also registrars for UK
names.
If it's only one site you have, then you may find a good hosting deal with
them too. I hosted a single site with them in the past, and never noticed
any downtime.
You will certainly find hosting cheaper, but I can't vouch for reliability
on others.
You don't need to restrict yourself to the UK for either of theses things.
If your site gets very busy, you will find that hosts using servers in the
UK will be very expensive for bandwidth.

(With that subject line, you'll get a *lot*! - which is want you want, o'course.)

I've been hosting a few small companies on <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.pay-as-you-host.com" target="_blank">www.pay-as-you-host.com</a> for about three years
now and have little to moan about, while the prices are acceptable. They offer php and
mysql, too. (Even if you don't know what *they* are at present, I'm prepared to bet
you'll be starting to look at them within about six months as the itch to offer more
content and features begins. Always happens!)

You don't sign up for longer than 1 month at a time and you are not stuck with inflexible
webspace/data-transfer allocations.

I have always found their customer service a strong point.

OK, I'm not a UK webmaster, but I can still hand over some advice.
Domain registration:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.godaddy.com/" target="_blank">http://www.godaddy.com/</a> (.com/.net/.org/.info/.biz/.ws)
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.mydomain.com/" target="_blank">http://www.mydomain.com/</a> (.com/.net/.org/.info/.biz/.cc/.nu/.bz)
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.123-reg.co.uk/" target="_blank">http://www.123-reg.co.uk/</a> (.uk/.com/.net/.org/.info/.biz/.tv/.cc)
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.easyspace.com/" target="_blank">http://www.easyspace.com/</a> (.uk/.com/.net/.org/.info/.biz/.cn/.cc/+++)
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ukreg.com/" target="_blank">http://www.ukreg.com/</a> (.uk/.com/.net/.org/.info/.biz/.tv/.name)
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.nic.museum/" target="_blank">http://www.nic.museum/</a> (.museum only)
GoDaddy, 123-reg and EasySpace also provide (optional) hosting.
Web hosting:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.page-zone.com/" target="_blank">http://www.page-zone.com/</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.prohosting.com/" target="_blank">http://www.prohosting.com/</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.4dwebhosting.com/" target="_blank">http://www.4dwebhosting.com/</a>
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.tera-byte.com/" target="_blank">http://www.tera-byte.com/</a>
I can recommend using any of the above.
Also, if you want a .museum domain, the above registrar is the only source
for this type of domain.

They're in Canada, but don't let that worry you, they do have 24/7
telephone support, and it works!

Why don't you consider using a domain forwarding company (www.123-reg.co.uk,
for example) and then hosting the web site on the web space your ISP gives
you as part of your contract.
I've been doing this for some time with excellent results, and it costs me
virtually nothing beyond what I've already paid.

I've hosted 6 sites with
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.qawebhosting.com" target="_blank">www.qawebhosting.com</a>
Good price and reliable.
