Here is my setup. I'll try to explain.
I Have Exchange 2003 behind an ISA server, this is my message store and where my users point to retrieve email.
I have SMTP on this server set to relay messages to the SMTP service running on the ISA server and all works fine.

Now to the guts of the problem.

The DNS that the ISA server needs to use is different than what my SMTP server needs to use. Anyhow long story short,
in Exchange 2003 you can set up External DNS's for the SMTP connection so that it will resolve correctly. In IIS I can't seem to find this ability. Is there something I"m missing or a registry patch perhaps?

Many Thanks

Josh

It's just not there. Nor really needed either. Your ISA can
translate your addresses.

ISA won't work to translate the addresses (thanks for stating the obvious though) as indicated in the original post where I wrote "The DNS that the ISA server needs to use is different than what my SMTP server needs to use"

I'll give you some more info so it makes sense to you and maybe you can think of a better way

I wish I could draw a picture here :->

ISA has a default route out to the internet
ISA also has a route to a private frame
The private frame connects to Mercedes Benz to access a web application over thier private network.

In order to use this web application I need to use their DNS on ISA because for some reason they use mbusa.com on both the frame and on the internet, but with different IP addresses. So the public ISP DNS returns the wrong addresses for the web application.

Using their DNS provides all the resolution I need for everything ...One problem, it returns the MX record of their SMTP server on the private frame. Their email server won't accept email at that IP, instead it has to be routed over the internet, and this is why I need SMTP to use it's own DNS!

Thanks for your help
Josh

Duplicate the records you need with the appropriate addresses on your
internal DNS. Or use a hosts file on your SMTP server with the host
name and IP needed for the SMTP service. Check a DNS group for
specifics.
