Post subject: Tracing Bottleneck on Internet?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi,

I have 2 websites hosted by Yahoo Webhosting. I noticed lately it
takes too long to view my sites. I used to be able to download pages
from my sites quickly.

Called Yahoo tech support and was told that they could download the
pages very quickly (within a couple of seconds vs. nearly a minute
for me). The only solution they suggested was to trace my internet
traffic and find out where the bottleneck is. I wonder how I should
go about doing it.

I can access other websites quickly though.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Terry

Use traceroute (tracert in Windows) and see how many hops it takes. The
more hops the slower.

The yahoo guys are testing your Yahoo site. This probably means they are
testing it within their own network, naturally it will be quick for them. I
suggest asking some friends who don't use your ISP to check the speed. It
could be your ISP who's slow.

The yahoo guy told me that he accessed the sites NOT from their
inside network. I did the tracert and found it took 13 hops to
access my sites. Same number of hops to yahoo.com, but I can
download yahoo pages very quickly.

If you're using IE, sometimes IE can be pretty slow on certain type of
sites. Try a different browser. Just a thought.

The main site is:
  http://www.computerlifeline.com/

Please let me know how long it takes to view the home page. It takes
me nearly a one minute or longer now. Used to get it in a few
seconds.

The site loads in less than 3 seconds for me. Pretty fast.

You really *DON'T* read this newsgroup, do you? Even *I* know that
Charles uses a Windows PC; he's mentioned it before.

If you read the posts here more often you would recall Charles saying a
while back that he "feels comfortable" with using the *nix stuff on his
server, but when it comes to either a) setting up Linux or b) actually
using Linux on a home system, he wouldn't have the first clue.

Like Grey said, you really don't read this group at all.
