I'm popping in once in a while - although it was a month since I was
last here - I do try to take a look at the threads with interesting
topics, the longer threads etc., I don't have time any more to visit
daily or even weekly!

A month or two ago, it was even worse - they (google) appear to
getting slowly back to the old form, but I honestly think they blew it
in a big way. IMO the quality of results has dropped for me as a
searcher, and I find myself cursing more and more than I'm simply
trying to find information. That has got to be infuriating for
someone who is less than an expert searcher (I don't think it a
stretch to consider a seasoned internet professional an expert
searcher, although you do run into some clueless tossers in this
business!).

I think it's both - but it doesn't matter to the average searcher -
they are after quality results, if and when they hit a portal site
with one or two quality bits of information on the page, and a lot of
ads and junk, are they impressed? Possibly not, but if they're total
newbies, do they care, or do they simply click through the paid ad to
the info they're after? I don't know for sure. I'd like to see some
REAL research on the matter. The regulars and older resident long
time posters are probably NOT average searchers!

regards

Greg

I was living in Estes Park when it happened. We just got a sprinkle. Lost a
few friends that lived in the canyon though.

Beef jerky is strips of dried beef.

The benefit of a strong brand/identity, I recognised your site in an
instant!

You can get some links by politely emailing related services and asking to
trade links. Every webmaster in a similar position to yourself will jump at
the chance to trade links.

Tread carefully though, you don't want to be accused of spamming.

Just noticed the title on your site. I would certainly include generic
terms like "snack food" for example. Or to use the term you used to
describe it to me, "dried beef" snack.

The title is quite important to search engines.

Im still trying to figure out the value of having a google
result.
Eg one of our sites had a current pv of 6 yet received only
around 10+ visitors per day

Another site has a pv of 0 but gets around 300 - 500
visitors per day.

Then to really confuse things, most of our sales come from a
site not publicly 'visable as it is not listed on the ICANN
root and can only be reached by an alternative dns.

Far as I can tell, being 'well' listed in google is a bit
like being prominant in the UBD. We advertised in that for
years, got an average of 3 phone calls a year. Two wrong
numbers and one looking for our opposition!

Guess what I am really saying is I have my doubts about all
the energy put into getting a good listing in google. Even
where it may be effective in generating a top position
unless that results in an increase in sales ????

I suspect that the same energy put into more effective
marketing methods may be a better option. I think spammers
may be on the right track - they are just using the wrong
method. By that I mean that the more people you touch base
with the more sales you make.
Finding sites on a search engine, at best, are about
locating options. So even when your site comes top, it may
only be one of several the visitor looks at. Target
marketing on the other hand is all about focusing your
qualified prospects on your option only.

That's the bottom-line Bill. I have said so myself many times before.

What's the point coming top, or getting huge numbers of visitors, if they
walk away empty handed?

Pleasing the bots is not something I spend a lot of time on. I do so much,
then leave it, which is all you can/should do.
