Post subject: A Tale of Two Domain Registrars
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I had two domains non hosted. One registered through GKG.net and one
through GoDaddy.

On Wed Aug 06 23:25:59 I finished signing up one hosting account, got
the name server information and immediately signed on to GKG.net to
input that info. Later I logged on to the acct via ftp and stuck up
a placeholder page.

The next day I decided to get a 2nd acct. w/ the same web host.

On Thu Aug 07 15:27:25 I finished signing that up, got the name server
information, immediately signed on to GoDaddy and input that
information. Then I ftped a placeholder page.

As of late last night, Aug 7, neither one was propogated. At noon on
Aug 8, the goDaddy one is already pointing to the host, the other is
still not.

The moral to the story Smile I'm not *unhappy* with gkg.net. For
sentamental reasons, they are my very first registrar and have done
nothing wrong! I'm not even venting about them here. But I was
really really astounded by the speed goDaddy got things moving.
Especially seeing as how the domain there was parked w/Godaddy adverts
all over it, it would not have surprised me to see it take longer.
But it didn't!

Signing off,
I quit smoking 2w 4d 3h ago - $78.56 saved - 1d 10hr more life to
live!

Nothing special about that...to paraphrase Twain...Quiting smoking is the
easiest thing in the world. I do it three or four times a week.

It's a far greater thing I do now, than I have ever done (just being smart.)

I have never had a problem with nameservers propogating [1] using Network
Solutions, Easyspace, UKreg and Dotster.

Well done with the smokes! I stopped once, for a year, about 20 years ago!
Just think, with those extra hours you will live, you can wait for your
names to propogate!!

[1] I have never been happy with the use of the word propogate in this
instance. I think promulgate is better.

heheh! Funny Smile (Has a Liam moment!)

Oh I've never had a problem with any of them Smile I don't consider a
"wait" a real problem. I just thought it was cool to do 2 at the same
time and see one come in so much sooner. Then again, I'm easily
amused; and most of y'all have probably done lots of them at the same
time before. <g>

Oh my! I certainly HOPE they "get out there" faster than that!

That sounds almost lewd Razz

GoDaddy system is almost certainly 100% automated wheras the the other may
require some manual intervention ( authorisation maybe)

Nothing suprising there. When you understand the way the dns system works
you will appreciate why.
Today godaddy was in front, tommorrow it will be another. It is all
dependant on a series of variables including but not limited to
The time of day you made the changes - if it is just after the dns update
you will wait longer
The time of day the particular DNS is updated

At your end
Time of day (or in some cases which day of the week!) your ISP updates their
dns
How well your system overides any cache information

and on, and on, and on - - - - - - -

Most unlikely, that one registrars system, (at least for the same TLD) is
slower or faster than anothers in any real degree. I say that because most
use the same API supplied by the TLD registry. In the case of .com and .net
that is verisign.
(yes, for the critics, I am aware one or two Registrars may have developed
their own but in the main they tend to use the one provided)

Cool information there. I am constantly awed and amazed by new
things!
