About once a day on our dev server, most of our sites get
a "There is not enough storage to complete this operation"
error in the browser. That's it.
Could this be virtual memory, or possibly registry size?
Not anything to go on in the event log.

It actually is normally a problem w/memory fragmentation. Memory
allocations are (with few exceptions) contiguous blocks of memory. So, if
memory is fragmented, then the maximum contiguous block size can become
quite small even is there is a lot of memory available.

How does memory get fragmented? Usually by very, very small leaks (usually
tough to detect). I would recommend upgrading MDAC to the latest version
(2.Cool and the script engines (msdn.microsoft.com/scripting) and see if the
issue goes away.

Try updating the MDAC if you're using databases, this has been an
issue in the past. I think the current version is 2.8. You don't
mention OS version, but make sure you apply the latest service pack,
especially if you've installed something since the last time. You can
always check the virtual memory or registry size theory by increasing
them, as well as swap file if you've limited it in size. Especially
if you're running Java applets, I see this issue on Websphere servers
occasionally.
