Scott,
My experience is more with Non-Web based businesses. I have learnt few
things that I think are essential in any business.
- You need to have a product in mind. No e-commerce solution can substitute
for your mind.
- You should thoroughly research the product pricing and demands (Jewlery
items or any retail items work best on internet or consumer dirven market)
- You need to have the right Partners (I mean Suppliers here, you need to
understand and have good relationship with supplier that can provide you
products that can easily make you get more than 200% profit). You need to
quickly tie such Suppliers in by placing few first orders so they are
interested in you.
- After this Customers are not going to go anywhere, basically just becuase
you won the price war upfront. You can play with pricing very easily
beating soem well established stores etc.
I have helped several new starters by providing our quality and well
researched products and they are my best customers. My comany makes Retial
and Industrial products and we ship worldwide. We are vendors of big retail
stores and ship parts in 14ft containers. We reduce the need of Price
research because as soon as you show our products to the right Customer(that
is based on your research, they will place orders right away!). I have had
many who thought that they know everything and suppliers are nothing, but
they didnot last to long. Knowing the product is very very essential in any
business.
I have been told of the above by my customers themselves. I can provide
you two days access to my products whenever you are ready after doing your
own research. Search for keywords - Imitaiton Jewelry, Handicrafts, Costume
Jewelry and anything else you can think of related to these items. See the
selling prices you can sell stuff at and then write to me at
jewlery.DeleteThis@smartersourcing.com with your yahoo id (you will have to have a
yahoo id) and I will give you accces to our online catalog for two days.
You can then get to know the prices etc and you yourself can see what I am
talking about. You can even print all photos and use them for generating
orders from your local shops (this can help you generate business upfront
even without a website, o that later you can spend some good amount only on
web promotion of your business). Once oyu have ordres, give me call make a
payment and I will arrange for either samples or can ship to your customer
directly.
It is easy. With us you can work two ways - You pay us our amount and
charge whatever you want. (For starters I dont recomend too much greed,
first learn the trade)
Next you work on percentage basis wiht us. We offer upfront 5% commision on
total sales. You will get the amount soon afer the confirmation of payment
form your customer. This is how it will work.. You either print out or buy
some samples, show those to nearby retail or wholesale shops. Secure
orders, provide them ours or your payment information. Ask them to confirm
payment by providing you a proof of payment (usually a bank reciept for the
said amount). Soon after that you will get your percentage and we will
start woring on sending your items to your customers. After shipemtn we
will inform yuo and you should followup wiht them to see they recieved it.
Slowly when you build it up you can buy from us instead of any commissions.
Hope that helps.
Thanks,
Raj
By the way, I started this way. I am a GM Automotive engineer by
profession and last worked as Automotive Quality Manager in US. Just in
case, if you are thinking that jewlery is not a good product. If you work
with honesty, I can tell you that you will not need a job in three years.
