I've discovered a great new game for dealing with tele-sales people and
transforming their calls into an entertainment opportunity.....

When a sales call comes in, you can generally tell them from normal
calls.....When I'm sure it's a sales call, my first priority is to find out
just how determined this person is to make a sale.....

So the first thing I do is tell them "Hang on, I'm just going to put you on
hold while I transfer you to someone who can deal with your call"......Then
I put them on hold.....We don't have a PBX system, just an office phone that
plays Greensleeves at a caller when you press the right button......
So once their on hold, we take bets on how long we can keep them hanging
on......Generally the prize is a round of coffee's for the whole
office......
Every 5 to 10 minutes, I take them off hold and greet them as if I'm
answering the phone to them for the first time, then put them back on hold
again.........

I've always said that if I can keep a sales person hanging like this for a
whole hour, I'll be so impressed by their determiniation that I'll actually
hear them out and listen to whet they've got to say......
Alas, none have lasted that long......

I got _two_ calls today from the same telemarketing company. I'm generally
polite on the phone (though there are exceptions) and got as far as "I'm
sorry, but..." when they'd released the call. Guess who gets paid on a
per-call basis!<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Why don't you make it easy on yourselves and get your numbers
placed on the National Do Not Call Registry
(http://www.donotcall.gov)? After you have been on the list for three
months, if they call you they are subject to an eleven thousand dollar
criminal penalty per call.

I can't remember his name, but there is a guy who makes money
with these folks. What he does is record the calls and plays with
their minds. From what I've heard, some of those telemarketers are
going crazy by the time he gets through with them. Then he makes
comedy albums of these recordings. I guess he is one who wouldn't
want to be on the DNC Registry. Wink

Does the "National Do Not Call Registry" take phone numbers from outside the
U.S.? Didn't think so. I'm already in the Norwegian equivalent
"reservasjonsregisteret", both as an individual and my business. Then
there's the thing about international calls. Can't do much about those.

Much more fun. First, pretend you're interested. Then, waste as much of
their time as possible. There's a whole lot of tricks to play on them. I'll
try to remember that next time some foreign company calls me up trying to
sell me something.
