Post subject: Slow response to "reciprocal linking" thread....
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

After having the same domain and website since 1997 and having done all the
"other stuff" to get visitors to my site. I have come to the conclusion that
the best all around advertising is plain old "word of mouth" advertising. I
have a personal website, I do not sell anything nor do I have a zillion
links to "How to make a zillion dollars"...LOL... I must say one of my
biggest mistakes was putting an FFA page on my site. Still killing weeds on
that one..<grin>...My only "Advertising" is LinkExchange (mainly used for
very inaccurate tracking). Now...As to "reciprocal linking" I guess it might
work if all you are going to have is a linking database site. After all, if
I have to link back to the sites that link to me, well, that can be very
labor intense. At last count ( again very inaccurate) I have 1,300 +- links
to my site. Mostly to my Graphics Gallery..http://www.neco1.com/graphics
My site is spidered by the most active services i.e. google, road runner,
vista, msm, ask jeeves.
(following stats are for the whole month of July)
I do get a few hits from them, but by far it is "Direct Request" that is the
highest rate just about 32% (at 202766 visits) versus 16176 visits from
Total Unique URLs.
And from links (Total Unique Referrers) was only 1018 visits. Most of those
links are on sites that have links to help other webmasters or newbies.
The most traffic is to my graphic section. And I get a lot of return traffic
simple because it is just graphics with no pop-ups or stupid rank-um pages.
That is what does the advertising. Webmasters and others will pass the url
to others....works for me...
That's my 2 cents worth.
