Post subject: Slow Page Serving from WinXP Pro
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello,

I have recently built a new XP Pro box and installed IIS to test development
work. I have a very small network to test the pages over and it seems to be
giving me a few troubles. When I request an HTML page on the server it
displays it in a reasonanble time (1-2 seconds) but when I attempt to browse
the same page from another PC in the workgroup it takes about 60+ seconds.

I appreciate that this could be due to how i've built the network (workgroup
Pc's and a gateway) but was wondering if XP had any known 'features'
regarding this matter.

The client is a Win98 box running IE6. The network is running at 100Mpbs.

Are there any tools I could use to assist in determining the problem? I'm
fairly certian it's because I haven't given permissions or given the wrong
permissions to something, but I'm not realy a network person so am not too
sure what.

Thanks in advance.

I would check the IE settings on the clients, and ensure they are not trying to go out your gateway to get to your box. Also, have
them type in the IP address of your xp box in the browser to see if that helps.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.

This sounds familiar. I always used to use the dialup connection before I
had the network, so you could well be right.

I'll have a look and let you know.

Thank you.

Thanks,

After looking at my setup and following your suggestion I noticed that the
IP address worked in about half a second whilst the server name took about
52 seconds. I guess this is a problem with the way I have my network
configured and so i'll follow this up in the XP forum.

Thanks for your suggestions.
