When you do a search on google and it gives you a list of sites...under each
site description is a link that says "Similar Pages". I was bored today so
I started checking out some of those Similar Pages links. The list of sites
that were pulled up were NOTHING like the original.
For example, a competitors link pulled up "Similar Pages" to a pizza place,
a catholic school, a personal blog site and several other TOTALLY unrelated
sites that didn't even look anything like the original.
So, what the heck is "similar" about these other "pages"?!?

Like you said...NOTHING
Welcome to the new Google.
Maybe it's meaning Pizza, Catholics eat pizza and yak about it on a blog?

Try checking who is linking to these sites. I think it is based on who
links to who. That feature of Google has always been pretty much useless.

Voila. Look at this:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=related%3Awww.aeonawakening.com&btnG=Search&meta=" target="_blank">http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=related%3Awww.aeonawakeni...com&btn</a>
This site happens to be run by a woman I know who sells various new age
stuff on the Net. It has *absolutely* nothing to do with DXM. Notice that
both of my DXM websites, and also the Third Plateau site shows up. The
reason is because *I* happen to have added a link to her site on the home
page of <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.dextromethorphan.ws." target="_blank">www.dextromethorphan.ws.</a> That site of mine has a Google Toolbar PR6,
and I suspect it is very close to a PR7. In Google's algo, high PR means a
site is seen as an authority. I also happen to link to the Third Plateau on
both of my DXM websites.
In a nutshell, the reason that her site shows 3 different DXM websites as
being "related" is that her site's 2 most authorative links happen to come
from DXM sites. The Third Plateau shows up in there also because Google
considers my sites highly authoratative, and I link to that also.
In a nutshell, related sites have similar content, but who decides to
link to them.

Should be "In a nutshell, related sites are NOT based similar content..."

I think it is a combination of "linking thoughts". If you have a
GeoCities site then you will have GeoCities being one the "similar
pages" listed. If you use a freebie counter, though, then the freebie
counter folks' site may be listed as one of the "similar pages" also.
Then a couple tossed in on "theme" thought? At least some of the I see
listed for my site are one that I don't link to and they don't link to
me ... but maybe it is something "similar" from DMOZ listings? I
haven't fully figured the "unlinked" connection yet ...

Useless. Never use it. I mentioned before how bad it was.
Generally I am in the "Google can do no wrong" camp, but with "I feel
lucky" and "similar pages" there's hope for us all!

So according to Google, I can say that I'm related to <insert famous

Wrong for "I'm feeling lucky". It works well if you are near certain the
query will have the site you want as #1.

I was thinking along the lines of a service that no-one uses. I did a
poll in here about "I'm feeling lucky", nobody used it.
You have to ask yourself why nobody uses it.
Personally I like to pick the sites myself.

I use "I'm feeling lucky". I only do when I am not looking to pick what
site I want, but when I already know the site and want to get to it quick.

I have never done that.
If I know the site, I would have it bookmarked, or I would know the
address.
Failing that, I would just splash-out on an extra click.
