We are updating our shopping cart system and are on the lookout for ways to
make it better.
We have just implemented multiple payment options and an extra postage and
packing system.

Anyone got any suggestions for ways we can improve our product, bearing in
mind, we are marketting this to the UK small to medium sized business.
Where do other shopping cart systems fall down?

Many thanks
RG

Learn from Amazon.com. I think they have the best usability experience.

Here are my ideas:

- Don't ask for credit card info before telling me the total charges (this
should include shipping charges, taxes.. etc)

- I like Paypal as a payment option and not one of those silly 'buy now'
buttons where you can buy only one item at a time.

- Put several clear photos of the product showing different views. Put
options to view large images. Include specifications like size and weight.

- Include a progress indicator so I knwo how many steps the order process
takes.

- When you ship, notify the customer and include a tracking #.

- In general avoid anything that frustrates a customer so put yourself in
their shoes and experiment.

No, sorry, it's sitting here on a local machine at the moments.

Really I would like to hear what people think would make a shopping cart
system the best.
Anyone think existing shopping carts systems are letting themselves down?
If so, what and why?

TIA

He should definitely be using "shopping basket" and sticking clear of
things like "trolley" or "old lady's wicker basket with cat hair and tea
bags" because they sound silly.

Use shopping cart!

Why - usabilty, its the recognised web term for it, its not an
americanism any more its net-lingo... Plus its considerably shorter than
most other words and shorter words work much better on screen... you
also might want to try a logo as well...

The net truly has its own language...

I can suggest a couple of good ones;

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.tesco.com" target="_blank">www.tesco.com</a> - only grocery shopping. We use this once a month and get
all our food delivered. Their pages aren't so smart in non-IE browsers
though Sad

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.play.com" target="_blank">www.play.com</a> - very short path to actually placing an order, very quick
process.

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.amazon.co.uk" target="_blank">www.amazon.co.uk</a> - oen click is great/dangerous Smile

Which is why Amazon don't enable it on accounts by default - which is a a
good thing IMHO and I would have ordered too many silly things by now all
by accident :s

Play.com is cheaper anyway, and I've not noticed any bank account
emptying features on there yet (thankfully).

Either... they are (at least here in the UK) interchangeable. I guess it
comes down to marketing. I'd generally suggest basket (as that's what
they are called in "real life" in the UK), but I dont think it matters much.

You bet!

I bought 2 DVDs (Tommy, Abigail's Party) last week after mentioning them in
here!

NO! It's an Americanism. Unless we want to graduate from being the
USA's largest aircraft-carrier to the 52nd (?) state we need to resist
the Americanism of our language.

Heck, we go to shops and use shopping trolleys or shopping baskets.
Yes we go to the checkout.
