Post subject: Setting up e-commerce website for liquor store, what would you charge if similar
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hello everybody,
I am a newbie wed designer. I have done some simple sites and I
finally had my big break. I will be designing a website for a liquor
store, including being able to order liquor online and picking it up
in the store. In fact the owner have me a site they liked and would
like it similar to the one I listed. What would you charge for it?
How about to do maintenance for changing the bi-weekly sales too?
Thanks in advance!

Use a content management system (CMS) and/or templates. A great many already
available on the scripting sites.

Did a wine site a while back. The issue with liquor in the US is
distribution. Laws were set up after Prohibition and haven't changed
substantially since them. Plus there are a great many individual state
variances which effectively eliminate the possibility of online sales in
many states.

You can't just pop the stuff to UPS and have them deliver it in those states
that do allow delivery to the home(several don't). Has to be signed for by
an adult with id. Some states only allow delivery within certain hours or
days of the week - e.g. not on Sunday.

Means you need to have special handling arrangements set up with your
carrier in case no one's home or the time's wrong. The carrier has to store
it (more $) for another delivery attempt, and some liquor products - like
some wines - need to be stored and transited in special environments - or at
least not in a sub-zero cargo hold or in a truck in 100 degree weather.

Some states only allow distribution by monopolied suppliers who were
established by statute in 1929. Some of them are willing to accept your
delivery and will apply their own mark-up for the service. Some will deliver
to the consumer, but most expect the consumer to pick-up.

If you want to sell on as close to a national basis as possible, you will sp
end a great... great... deal more time addressing the business issues with
legal types than constructing the site.

The bottom line is that the business issues involving distribution will
drive the complexity of an e-commerce site for wine. You need to work with
the client to define target distribution areas, address the federal and
state law in those areas, and have a method of dealing with site visitors
from other areas.
