I am a student studying eCommerce

I am interested in finding out how search engines work, mainly google.

How do they rate pages? How do you increase your placement? Do all
search engines work the same way? How do you submit a new site?

Any help with these questions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Joe, Elaine here, Google rate pages starting from No.1 in order of
their popularity. Sorry, can't tell you much more than this as I am
still figuring this out myself.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

If anyone new the perfect answer he/she would be a millionaire Smile
Each search engine has an algorythm that is the best guarded secret
you can find.

Thru analysis of deployed web sites some have come up with common
factors for example:

-We know google puts high importance on links to your site
-We know that content (text on your site) is high in importance
-We know that Bolding and using Header Tags on particular words can
help give these particular keywords importance
-We know that keyword density (spacing between similar and other
words) is important
-Backlinks are important
-Title tags are important in relevance with your keywords
etc... etc... (can't give out all the secrets Smile)

Unfortunatly no one can confirm exactly how these are combined in
order to get the best rankings. A good SEO (Search Engine Optimizer)
will have experience with these search engines and have a good general
idea on what they are looking for and how to get it.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that getting on the search
engine is only part of the challenge not getting booted off is
another. Multiple submition, keywords spamming, index spamming and
similar pratices can get you banned from search engine. When looking
for an SEO make sure you find someone reputable.

Let me know if that helps...

When I started my web-site on a zero budget, I added my site to the
search engines which offered a free service. I couldn't afford any
other advertising but started using Google News Groups from about late
November, 2003. Some spider system (or whatever) picked up on this and
my site is now listed on search engines I haven't subscribed to. Maybe
someone can shed some light on this?

Howdy Joe,

They all use different formulas. In the case of Google, nobody knows except
their programmers how it works and I'm not sure they understand how it
really works for users. I know their marketing and publicity releases do
not match what you see for search results.

All of the search engines are floundering around trying to find a way to
automate quality while at the same time carry more listings than anyone
else. Quite frankly, they are all creating bigger messes and getting
further in debt in the process.

You start out with <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.dmoz.org" target="_blank">www.dmoz.org</a> to get things rolling. They use a simple
"list as found" search technique. Listings on DMOZ are picked up by all of
the top search engines and they trickle over to others from there. Many of
the sites I host have only submitted to DMOZ and are doing well.

Thanks, Chris <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bizynet.com" target="_blank">http://www.bizynet.com</a>

Google often changes their formula to rank websites. Some have said
their most recent change is to increase revenue from their AdWords
program. For more information on the Google dance and how search
engines work in general, I would recommend checking out <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ClickZ.com" target="_blank">www.ClickZ.com</a>
