Archived from groups: alt>internet>search-engines, others (more info?)

I need a search engine reporting tool to see my ranking in Google. I have
used http://www.pwqsoft.com/ it is okay if I only monitor the home page of
my site, it needs to know specific URLs before it can generate the report.
My site has 1000 pages, I cannot enter all pages and run the report.

what I want a report like this.

keywords:
sony television http://www.mywebsite.com/
position: #10
http://www.mywebsite.com/somepage.html
position: #15
http://www.mywebsite.com/somepage.html
position: #15

plasma television http://www.mywebsite.com/
position: #20
http://www.mywebsite.com/somepage.html
position: #12

Is there such tool out there to do that?

I believe that web position gold does, but using that violates Google's
terms of service (http://www.google.com/terms_of_service.html) -
specifically:

<quote>
No Automated Querying

You may not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system
without express permission in advance from Google. Note that "sending
automated queries" includes, among other things:

* using any software which sends queries to Google to determine how a
website or webpage "ranks" on Google for various queries;
* "meta-searching" Google; and
* performing "offline" searches on Google.
</quote>

However, just above that you also see:
<quote>
Personal Use Only

The Google Services are made available for your personal, non-commercial
use only. You may not use the Google Services to sell a product or
service, or to increase traffic to your Web site for commercial reasons,
such as advertising sales...

The closest thing I know of is this:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/keywords/" target="_blank">http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/keywords/</a>

which gives reports like this

<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.domain1.com" target="_blank">www.domain1.com</a>
#1 - keyword keyword
#1 keyword1 keywords
#2 kewords green
#6 keywords pink
#7 pink kewords
#35 orange keywords
#465 rubbish keyword

So it doesn't tell you which particular url is ranked for the keyphrase but
you can probably work that out if you know your site well enough (maybe).

Which technically also covers using IE or any other
browser to manually check your SERPs. This
reads much like a "we reserve the right to cut
you off if you insist on pissing us off" clause.

Personally, I'm guessing Google is basically
reasonable and that if I don't draw attention
to myself by pounding them with frequent
requests, they won't really care whether my
periodic SERPs checks were made manully
via IE or automatically with a script that
precisely emulates the same set of HTTP
requests (assuming they had any motivation
to try to detect the difference). If I were
checking 1,000 keywords every hour of
every day, well, that would sort of be asking
for it I suppose. Given how obsessed people
are with minute-by-minute changes in their
SERPs, I can see how Google needs to
protect themselves from being swamped
with automated requests.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

And how to do legally get around breaching Googles terms of usage? I'd hate
to trust a company if it's likely to end up on the end of legal action.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

It is not a breach.

There is a lot of confusion aroudn this. Google authorizes this tool as
long as we use their API.
If you find my company hard to trust, then you would have to say the same
thing about Bruce Clay.com, and Digital Point.

Yes, the Google API is the one thing that they approve of - as long as
you are following their rules for that (which are pretty relaxed). This
is mainly because in order to use it, you have to have a "key" that
allows 1000 queries a day. That way, they can limit how much traffic
they will actually get hit with. Also, I believe that the server for the
API results isn't the same one that runs the web search, so they can
easily throttle the bandwidth appropriately.

I personally use the Google API for some projects of mine. It's really
nice from a programming standpoint, but the results aren't 100%
accurate. Then again, depending on the time of day you access Google web
search, you're likely to get different results there as well.

You spelled it out quite accurately Justin, thanks.

1.) We must restrict our queries to 1000 per day or less

2.) The servers that use the API are different than the regular web search
ones...and sometimes you get a slightly different result over the course of
a few days but it has always caught up within a few days from what we have
seen since last November.

3.) If those who are raising this issue (OP) would point out where in the
terms of service for the API it states that we cannot, I would be happy to
re-review our license and terms.

We try to do our homework.

Charles,

Surely you must be joking. <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bruceclay.com" target="_blank">www.bruceclay.com</a> is the SEO pro, has been for
at least ten years. Anyone who has done SEO knows of Bruce Clay...or
should. Probably the most reputable, solid SEO company out.

Try typing in "search engine optimization" at a search engine and see. for
years he has been top two. Last week they slipped to 8 or 9.

Not smoke-and-mirror...well researched.

You can do this with the google api and some programming. I wrote something
similar to what you describe using perl.
