Post subject: Screen resolution?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I'm getting someone to design a website for me. But I have received
different advice from various people regarding the screen resolution to go
for.

One or two are almost religious in their fervour that the website should be
designed around 800 by 600 pixels resolution.

A number of others advise me that in recent times, with more and more
people buying new and bigger monitors, that 800 by 600 is pretty old hat,
and that 1024 by 768 is the new standard to work to.

I am sorta lost as to what to do!

Tips, advice? 1024 by 768 or 800 by 600?

TIA.

You can safely ignore anything those people say. They don't understand
the first thing about the web.

You can safely ignore anything those people say, too.

There is only one resolution to target: 100%<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

What about the third group who knows that monitor resolution IS NOT
IMPORTANT!

Sorry for shouting.

Tell them to design for... no size. And don't let them get away
without reading about it.

contentious issue, and everyone will give you different advice.
unfortunately different designs will suit differenent resolutions, some
don't even need to be designed to a resolution at all...

I personally use CSS now to design sites as much as possible, and design for
800 x 600 which will degrade, or won't look bad in greater resolutions...

Don't design for either.....Your design should be a fluid size, that adjusts
to fit any screen size.....

1) SpaceGirl... it would be nice if your newsreader trimmed sigs.

2) I agree that fluid size is an unattainable ideal. For instance, you
can have a fluid design, but what is the minimum size your page should
look good in? Is 800x600 the rule there? 640x480? *ALL* pages, when
shrunk small enough, cause horizontal scrollbars. What is the minimum
size we should be designing for?

AnySizeDesign is a nice goal to strive for, but just doesn't cover all the
possibilities out there.

SHOULD be ?

According to who?

There are loads of factors to consider including the usability of column
width, width of images, headers etc... for design - it is a bit like saying
that every burger should contain beef (you can have a chicken burger) horses
for courses, especially with conflicting guide lines, including the UK
Government...

Problem is that if you have a 1600 pixels wide screen, on a new wide inch
monitor, the text will be uncomfortably wide to read... people can resize
their browsers, but according to some people, you should have done this for
them...

Doohickeys wraps horizontally at less than 800 pixels!!!

Only because I'm a Luddite. All the ancient games I run on my ancient Mac
require 640x480. I can run 1280x1024. Font adjustments everywhere. Bah,
why bother? My monitor is a cheap 17" job. Boy, the price on those has
plummeted recently! 200 USD delivered.
Besides, it's fun to point out side scrolling to the fixed-size design
faction. I heard of another guy in Nepal that still uses my resolution, so
I'm not alone.
