Post subject: SSL connection not working for some people? Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

I just set up a site at a new host, and I'm having a weird problem where
the shared SSL they provide just flat doesn't work for some users.
When I try to access https://autodepot.merchantsecure.com/ I get "page
cannot be displayed" and "Unable to connect" errors in either IE or
Firefox using several different PCs on the same LAN.
When Tech support told me it was set up correctly on their end, I sent
the link out to some friends, and some of them experienced the same
problem I did, while others said it worked fine.
I can access the hosting account's non-secure URLs without any problem
whatsoever, and when I ping the URL, it responds from the appropriate IP
address.
Has anyone ever experienced an SSL URL that worked for some people but
others couldn't connect to it? Any ideas why this might happen?
Thanks. >> Stay informed about: SSL connection not working for some people? |

Perhaps something in your firewall is preventing it? I get it fine, and
the certificate looks OK.
Can you access any of their other secure sites on this server? And can
you telnet to port 443 on your site?

It looks like it might just be a case of extremely slow DNS propagation
(4 days!) -- as of the two replies in this group, one couldn't hit it
and the other could. >> Stay informed about: SSL connection not working for some people? |

It shouldn't take four days to propagate. The last change I made did it
in a few hours. And even back in the old days (when they just updated
twice a day instead) it never took more than 48-72 hours.
Of course, this could be a problem if your TTL value is set to several
days. But I don't know of many nameservers where that would be the default.
You could tell if you had the failing people ping the server to see if
it comes back with the correct ip.

The host resolves fine.

autodepot.merchantsecure.com = 64.34.120.63
There is no HTTP server running on either port 80 or 443. Or on any
other port AFAICT.

ping returns 64.34.120.63 but site is not accessible to me.

Interesting. Works fine from here, and I get the same IP for ping.
It almost looks like a filter in place on the server. Firewall blocking
by ip address maybe?

Actually, there is, Joe. I can connect to it just fine.
Both ports are active, although Port 80 just puts up a message that you
need to be using https.
Very strange.

Surprise, surprise: their tech support told me for days nothing was
wrong, and then 10 minutes after another help ticket on the subject it
was magically working.
