Saw a few postings mentioning SSL problems on a web site and wanted to post
an answer I found.
Background: after renewing a cert we were not able to pull any
https://
calls to existing docs. It was working fine until the renewal cert was
installed. Calls to pages with
http:// were working fine. Calls to pages
in the same directory with
https:// were failing with 404 and they had
worked previously. After checking MS KBase and Google Groups, we didn't
find the answer to our issue.
Fix: I couldn't reboot the server so just restarted the web services and
then it worked. (Not sure if simply restarting the site would have worked
but it only took a few seconds anyway.)
As a side note, also learned that IIS5 with Windows SP1, SP2 and SP3 breaks
the cert request process by generating an invalid cert request (the org ID
field is too long in SP2 & 3). A hotfix or SP4 fixes it. Verisign's web
site mentions this, though the MS KBase article is hard to find.
