I have a site I've been building and my boss wants the button for the
page you are on to remain "lit" until you leave it for the next page.
The problem with that is, I have the site in frame. The nav buttons
are in the left frame and the pages are right/bottom.
I haven't taken any classes--just learned what I know on the fly--so
I'm not sure how to do this. I'm using Dreamweaver and this is a
simple no-flash site and I haven't got any CSS. There are already
rollovers on the buttons for hover and click, and I can make it stay
lit, obviously, I just can't make it "go out" when they go to another
page. I haven't found anything in the extensive help files so I'm not
sure if it can be done without expanded programming. Help?

The only way *I could think of* would be to make a new page pop up in your
left frame with the highlighted button for each site. Im sure some
javascript could make your left frame switch pages when your right frame is
loaded. But if you did that the left frame would have to reload on each
click, which would suck. Thats about all I could think of.
If I were you I would incorporate the nav bar into your main site and get
rid of the frames altogether. Solves your problems. And frames can be
misused alot. I know from experience.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: Question about Rollovers |

In Dreamweaver, click on Insert-->Interactive Images---->Navigation
Bar
You can specify different images to use for the UP/Over/Down/Over
while Down States. Macromedia has a good tutorial on it at their site.
Better to probably ask in macromeia.dreamweaver newsgroup

Some of the slickest and unique routines I've found are from Project IIV
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.wecanuk.co.uk" target="_blank">www.wecanuk.co.uk</a> is based on their Jazz theme pack. Might be worth a look
for show hide layer and CSS goodies.

yep
one of the main reasons I almost never use frames is that
you lose the possibility of using the navigation menu to
also clearly show the viewer where on the site they are
a good css rollover menu adds damn all to the file size
and lets every page have an individual menu...only a
problem on a megasite

Your boss has the right idea - sort of - it is also considered good practice
to disable (if not disappear) any links pointing to the current page.

lose the frames - <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://google.com/search?q=%22frames+are+evil%22" target="_blank">http://google.com/search?q=%22frames+are+evil%22</a>

join the club - hang around here, join in where you can but watch where you
tread - some of the patrons get a little grumpy if you wake them up before
dusk/dawn/sex.

I'm gonna pretend I didn't read that - web pages are made with HTML. new
web pages are made with HTML 4.01 Strict <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/" target="_blank">http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/</a>

no-flash is good - at least until you know how to use it.

then, my friend, it's time to learn; right after you consolidate what you
have already picked up about HTML

why not? surely even using javascript you should be able to switch out all
the lights and just turn on the one you want.
> I haven't found anything in the extensive help files so I'm not

"expanded" ? not sure about that, but I suspect the solution to your problem
is fairly trivial after you dump the frames and employ a little server-side
scripting mixed in with a touch of SSI (Server Side Includes). If your site
is professionally hosted then I'm sure these facilities will be available to
you - the exact flavour will depend on the server.

Wha'? I'm not so wimpy geek wannabe using Dreamweaver. I just hate
hadncoding tables, that's all. I *can* Notepad the whole site if I
wanted to. It's only recently I gave in to a program. Besides, but of
the bargain for doing the site was they buy me Dreamweaver and
Photoshop. I thought it was fair given that I'm no expert.

Dont let them bother you, Brandy. Their under the impression that the only
people who know anything about web design, is them. And if anybody asks a
question it automatically puts them in the "I dont even know HTML" category.
I also dont like making tables by hand. Its kinda like, why walk if you can
ride a bike? Their from the old days and try to do everything by hand no
matter how much easier it would be with a tool.
As for the frames, if your boss likes them, keep them.
One of the worst things about frames, in my opinion, is that the search
engines usually dont index them. So all links from search engines will take
you to the main page. I have a site that comes in first on several search
terms in google, but you can never find the site with the frames, it always
takes you to the main page.
Anyway, good luck on your javascripting.

Funny thing about my fan site was that two inner pages always came up
in the search engines without the main page frame. I know that can be
annoying.
My next trick will be finding a script to submit a comment form. I've
got it set up so that it uses the surfer's email, but I know that
creeps out people.
These guys are ecstatic about having any site at all. They put off
going live because it wasn't perfect. I finally convinced them a web
site is an ongoing evolution of business and ideas. Get a presense
first, then tweak it as you identify your needs more specifically. It
would be a bummer to create something totally fabu and then have it not
apply. It's good now. It's basic, but professional. They're just
already wanting more. I may just have some kind of "you are here" hint
on the page itself instead of highlighting the buttons. Anyone care to
help me with watermarks?

Its awesome and its free, someone in here told me about it not too long ago.
I just implemented it into my webpage. It comes with acknowledgment,
responder, text/mySQL logging features and many more, plus its free. Its PHP
based but I set it up in no time with almost no knowledge of PHP. It comes
with fairly in-depth documentation and they have a support forum with a
really cool guy named patrick o'hara that will help you with anything. If
you decide to use it, and had any problems, just ask and I'll help you out.

No they don't - they want sales/funding/recognition or somesuch.

Then it is your job to educate them why frames are hopeless.

tricky - then we can only discuss a solution in abstract terms. one
possible: you already have a script which will switch on a particular link.
now you must copy it and rewrite it so that it will switch off the link.
then modify it so that it will switch off all links and call it just before
you switch on the current page link.

none taken - a URL is handy. a sample page showing the problem will often
suffice.
news:comp.lang.javascript is a splendid resource for this type of query.

I can tweak something up... tomorrow. I have this aversion to dragging
my laptop home every day when I don't do any work here (and want to
avoid the temptation). I've been migrating my life over to that
machine and nothing of value is left here except stuff I don't want my
employer to have if they suddenly take it all back. My desktop is
CRAP!!! There. I said it out loud.
