Post subject: Resources for setting up an Intranet?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>inetserver>iis (more info?)

Hello -

I would like to create an Intranet site on my local network.
The network is connected to the Internet via a cable modem router,
but I do *not* want the site exposed to the outside world.

Can anyone point me to a good resource or starting point for setting up IIS, network configuration, etc. for this scenario?

I have a clean Server 2003 available to play with, clients will be XP Pro.

Thanks.
dj

Then do not forward port 80 on your router.

Thanks for the info!

Newbie question: will not forwarding port 80 on my router also block outbound web browsing?

No - that's just for inbound.

If you do not want your users to visit Internet, you can block outgoing traffic on port 80 (if your router/firewall can do that).

There are other solutions as well, to restrict your users to not be able to browse Internet, if you want to.
