Post subject: Repetitive File Request from Server
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi,

I saw from my website log that sometimes, there are multiple requests for
the same file, like an image file, from the server. It seems like the
visitor's browser doesn't know how to cache files.

One extreme case is that one visitor's browser kept requesting the same
file for several hours.

I wonder what causes this and if there is anything I can do to prevent it.
Below is an example from my web log.

64.12.96.169 [18/Oct/2003:05:54:51 -0700] "GET /images/cell_02.gif
64.12.96.169 [18/Oct/2003:05:54:53 -0700] "GET /images/cell_02.gif
64.12.96.169 [18/Oct/2003:05:54:57 -0700] "GET /images/cell_02.gif

Thanks in advance,

Terry

That IP is in block 64.12.0.0/16 which is assigned to AOL

Are all the GETs from the same IP?

.... and for the same file?

I have seen similar repetitive hits from other ISPs. Not necessarily for
the same file. Very often, it is a very long list--all indicating it was
trying to get the same files. Recently, I got one visitor and the browser
did this for several hours and the log file got bloated.

Use a proxy cache <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.squid-cache.org/" target="_blank">http://www.squid-cache.org/</a>

Common files will be cached in RAM, and these request will not hit your web
server. Squid can run on a separate machine from the web server.
