Post subject: Remote restart of Apache 1.3/2.0 on Linux?
Archived from groups: alt>apache>configuration (more info?)

I have a requirement that I update the configuration on an Apache server
and then restart the server so that the new configuration is read. Is
there any ready-made tool from Apache for this? Or is there generally
an 'accepted practice' for accomplishing this?

The administration of the commands and communication to the server running
apache will be behind a corporate firewall. So, I'm *less* concerned at
the moment with the fact that this type of 'remote' access to the server
creates a security hole and *more* concerned with how to do it in the
first place.

Any help would be appreciated.

I use SSH to login to the box su as root then use apachectl stop, then
apachectl startssl

I know I could use apachectl restart but I have found that using that
sometimes doesnt work on my system (don't ask me why I need to reinstall and
recompile the kernel at some point in the future anyway.

A sound approach. It's looking like I'll be doing the same thing.
However, since I need to allow current connections to finish I'll probably
use apachectl graceful...
