Post subject: Promoting and marketing a news portal ?
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hello,

Two and a half years ago I created an aviation news portal,
planenews.com. The site grew and traffic increased. I still only get a
few hundred visitors a day only, but I haven't really promoted the
site.

I would like more experienced webmaster's opinions on how to promote
and market the site. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I am
even willing to share profits.

Right now, the banners are from affiliate programs. Advertising
doesn't even pay enough to cover hosting costs.

I feel like this site has great potential. Unfortunately, I am not a
businessman...

Constructive criticism and suggestions would be welcome...

Thank you, sincerely,

Gil.

Have you thought of taking out a small advert in Flight International or the
RAF News?......<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Hello,

I thought about a small ad in Sport Aviation, the EAA magazine..
I'll check Flight International.. If I can find an affordable space,
like the classifieds, that would be nice.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Well there are several options:

One, you can try using a web site such as AddMe.com. They can submit your
site to 10 search engines and that will give you some good results, but look
for it to take months to see any change. (You could try getting a lot of
keywords and a good site description and buy $.01 clicks through a PPC
search engine, I have a search engine, if you are interested E-mail me
personally and I will give you some free PPC advertising to test it out,
since I am an avid Plane Enthusiast myself.)

Second, buy advertising on web sites via banners. This method is very
ineffective. Reports indicate only .025% of people actually click on paid
banners placed on websites.

Third, you can use E-mail!!! This is one of the top most effective
advertising campaigns. You can have an ad placed in a targeted newsletter
that is sent out weekly to its members. This would yield the best results.
I recommend using a web site like mine to submit to e-zines so that you can
get fast results.

TIP: You might want to setup a newsletter if you haven't yet. This enables
you to stay in constant contact with plane enthusiasts...you can keep them
updated on site changes and actually make money off of advertising. Contact
me if you need more help.

Thanks,
Jeremy
