As a non-expert with a little previous experience of Linux and Solaris, I'm
getting very frustrated trying to use Apache on Gutsy Gibbon (Ubuntu 7.10
release version).
Firstly, the version delivered (and set up automatically in the server
version) seems to have all the configuration details in apache2.conf, not
httpd.conf as I keep reading. It took me some time just to find the document
root, as that information didn't seem to be there at all. When I did find it
(in var/www), I found I had no permission to either delete or overwrite
index.html. Every attempt to edit gave me an "Access denied" error. And this
was AFTER giving the command "sudo chmod 777 index.html", "sudo chmod 777"
on the directory and verifying that all users were supposed to have full
control of this file.
Looking just at the file and directory permissions, this seems to defy
logic. I can only assume that Apache is protecting its documents in some way
that's invisible to me. Do I REALLY have to use "sudo vim" every time I want
to edit a web page? This issue is a pain because it stops me from using a
Gnome-based editor.
I'm still trying to find out how to specify the default document (i.e. in
what order the server should look for index.html, default.php etc) and can't
find this anywhere. Most information on line seems to assume that the user
is already semi-expert and knows the terminology.
I would be very grateful for help with these two points, particularly the
"access denied" errors. Apologies if this has been asked here before: again,
I did a search and couldn't find anything.
