I have installed the pop 3 service and under the main tree
is myservername, under that I added a new domain
myservername.co.uk and added a few mailboxes to it.
In outlook express I`ve added
pop myserver.co.uk
smtp myserver.co.uk
account name myemail.DeleteThis@myserver.co.uk
password mypassoword
But all I get back from outlook is
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.
Possible causes for this include server problems, network
problems, or a long period of inactivity.
I have the smtp service running in iis control panel, but
the mail never gets to the pop accounts.
What am I doing wrong? I`m ready to pull my hair out! >> Stay informed about: Cant get Pop3 to work on Windows 2003 web edition |

Hi,
Is port 25(SMTP) and 110 (POP3) open? Sounds like you have problems
contacting the server.

yes the ports are open, the mail seems to go to the smtp
server drop box and bypasses the pop service all together.
So I can send mail, but its not picking the mail up. I can
only send mail if I put the relay options to allow anyone
to relay.

I dont understand!
Is the problem relaying or network connectivity? The error message you get
is not the one you get if you cannot relay. Please tell us more about your
setup and the problem, or look here for some instructions:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ilopia.com/Windows2003/Tutorials.aspx?id=2" target="_blank">http://www.ilopia.com/Windows2003/Tutorials.aspx?id=2</a>
What do you mean by "allow anyone to relay". Do you mean the Authentication?
Have you mixed up Authentication and Relaying?

That article you sent was good but I dont have that manage
you server option, it uses sharepoint, and that didnt help.
I am using the server as a web server and have smtp
service running. I installed the pop service.
When I try and connect with outlook I am now getting
The message could not be sent because one of the
recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail
address was 'simonstratford@hotmail.com'. Subject 'test',
Account: 'www.****.co.uk', Server: '***.co.uk', Protocol:
SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for
simonstratford DeleteThis @hotmail.com', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
I have main smtp set with access control options set to
relay off/nothing, and conection control with nothing in
it. is this right?
In ISS console I have under smtp
domains - mydefault domain (local default)
another domain(local custom)
I`m just not sure how to configure this, I`ve tried so
many options.
I set up the other domain using the pop3 service, but all
mail sent seems to just go to the defualt smtp server.
I`m not sure if this is a authentication issue

Hi,
This is a permissions problem. I suggest that you read this:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.ilopia.com/Windows2003/Tutorials.aspx?id=2#Client" target="_blank">http://www.ilopia.com/Windows2003/Tutorials.aspx?id=2#Client</a>
And also scroll up a bit from there and read the part that configures the
SMTP service.
I think that you want to have Windows Authentication & Anonymous as
Authentication, and for Relay i think you want to have "Allow all computers
which..." and "Only the list below" selected.
Also make sure that your client is set up to use a username and password for
authentication.

Thanks for the help so far, I can connect to the smtp
service now, so I can send mail with authentication, so at
least some progress.
However I cant receive mail from any of my accounts, I
have been using my hotmail to send mail to me DeleteThis @simon.co.uk
but it just keeps getting bounced.
I`ve configured the pop3 service but it just dosnt pick up
on anything, what am I missing?
The mx records are pointing to my server, do I have to
have exchange server insalled to use pop3 service?
